Subject: Trash Free Mystic webinar series

hello municipal partners,

I am writing to let you know about an upcoming webinar series organized by EPA's Trash Free Waters program and the Mystic River Watershed Association that we hope you and others from  your community will be able to attend. Recently, MyRWA, with EPA's support, has begun to explore how trash on our local streets and sidewalks ends up in the river, later leading to trash pollution in the ocean. This webinar series will explore both local programs to address this issue, as well as examples from leaders on Trash Free initiatives around the country. After the first two sessions focused on existing programs and solutions, the third session will be an opportunity for participants to discuss which approaches might work here in the Mystic River watershed. As a result, we encourage everyone to sign up for, and attend, all three sessions if you can.

More information about each session is below, and you can register here. We are most connected to municipal employees who work on stormwater and river-related issues, but this topic touches on many other areas, such as waste reduction, trash collection, and parks, so please feel free to share this with your colleagues who work on any aspect of this issue.

Best,

Darya Mattes

Join us for:

Trash Reduction in the Mystic River Watershed

(Virtual) workshops for municipalities and community groups in the Mystic River Watershed

What: EPA and MyRWA are hosting three (3) free information & discussion sessions on how to reduce the harmful inflow of trash into the Mystic River, aiming to begin to develop a shared trash-reduction campaign in the watershed. Sessions will include high-level context from EPA, MassDEP, MyRWA, and others, case examples from within and outside the Mystic Watershed, and time for participant discussion and exploration of the opportunities and challenges of enhancing water quality in the Mystic.

Participants: Municipal staff, community leaders, representatives of nonprofits, and volunteers who work on water quality and related topics in the Mystic River Watershed are welcome.

Why: Many of us may be familiar with the huge problem of trash in oceans worldwide -- but did you know that most trash in our oceans comes from rivers, and most trash in rivers comes from the land? Join us to learn how reducing the sources of trash in our communities, and capturing escaped trash before it enters rivers, can lead to cleaner water far beyond the Mystic River watershed. Learn in a casual, interactive setting about strategies from EPA, MassDEP, and other municipalities in the watershed and across the country.

Hosts: EPA and MyRWA
