Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the publication, in the form of a short book, of a transcription of a three-hour interview I conducted with Jean-Luc Godard in his studio in Rolle, Switzerland, in April 2005, about his then most recent film, 'Notre musique' ('Our Music', 2004).

I published a few extracts from this interview in 'Sight and Sound' at the time, but a couple of years later I transcribed the whole thing and sent it to Godard, and asked him for his permission to publish it in full. He sent it back to me with various comments and additions, and kindly said that he would be very happy for me to do so.

In advance of the interview, I had selected a number of images from his other films and videos, which I felt anticipated or chimed with 'Notre musique'. These images, which provided the basis for our discussion, are reproduced in the book alongside others from 'Notre musique' itself.

In the book, Godard discusses not only 'Notre musique' and those who played an important role in it (notably Elias Sanbar, Juan Goytisolo and Mahmoud Darwish), but also a wide range of other topics, including the New Wave, 'Ici et ailleurs' ('Here and Elsewhere', co-dir Anne-Marie Miéville, 1976), his montage practice, digital technology, suicide, and the large-scale exhibition project he was working on at the time, Collage(s) de France (which eventually became Voyage(s) en utopie).

The book, which is in French, is published by 202 Éditions, who have done a lovely job with its design and production. It runs to 104 pages and includes 75 images.

For further information, including sample pages and details of how to order it, see HERE.

I hope you enjoy it.

Best wishes,
Michael

Many thanks, Seamus. There are no plans to publish it in English at the moment, but if that changes I'll certainly let this group know.

Cheers,
Michael

I just came across this documentary, shown at the Venice FilmFest last year: Godard Cinema (2013), Cyril Leuthy.  Available on Kanopy.
