I always hear that the English translation (Breathless) of À bout de souffle is inaccurate.  From a literal standpoint it doesn't seem to be, but does that expression in French mean something other than "being out of breath?
   Thank you,
   Gloria

For me the problem is that 'breathless' (and not "à bout de souffle", particularly) has another meaning. I awaited her news breathlessly. (I was sitting down, I was not out of breath.) I think I would have called it "Out of Breath". Or something more idiomatic. "The End of the Road", like Preminger's (much better title than End of the Road) Where the Sidewalk Ends, which Godard may have been translating in his head, substituting breath for sidewalk.

A bout de souffle means breathless in a litteraly way but in a metaphoric way too. We use it to say that something or someone has no more strength, no more interest. Like "à bout de course" (which is the french title of Lumet's Running on the empty)

Poicard has no more energy when he accepts to stay on e he knew he has been betrayed.
