Joystick with Xbox 360 does nothing

I followed all of the install steps to setup SDL2 and gobot, but when I ru nthe joystick_xbox360 example it does nothing. I ran a simple SDL2 test in C and it detects the controller. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to debug this?

The same thing happens when I plug in a Dualshock 3 controller. The SDL2 example sees the controller but the gobot example does nothing.
