When I was 25 or 26 years old, I got this new boss called John Thomas. Sometimes, new bosses don't get on well with the 'old furniture' in an organisation. But we got on well. We mostly spoke briefly about work then. Last evening, I made up by asking him to narrate his life story and experiences in three cities of India and two countries overseas. It helped me understand one slice of journalism in the India of the 1970s-1990s, especially with a South Indian focus. --FN
