"...Goa was in a state of turmoil, punctuated only with the periods of calm when Pratapsingh was in power. Since the achievement of statehood, Goa has had as many as 18 CMs. Chief ministers in the 1990–2000 decade rose and fell at breakneck speed. Most of these politicians seemed to have no loyalty to any party; they all seemed to be motivated by the feeling of why-should-Pratapsingh-Rane-be-CM-every-time-and-why-not-me. They could not recognize that every time he took the CM’s chair, he outdid them in effective and disciplined governance. ‘Democracy is in a nascent stage in Goa, as well as in the rest of India. I spent 2023 pleasurably working and collaborating with the remarkable Mrs Vijayadevi Rane, to write a biography of Mr Pratapsingh Rane, Goa’s 6 time Chief Minister and in many ways the architect of modern Goa. It’s been a wonderful experience for me to gain an insight into a Goa that I didn’t know existed, far removed from touristic stereotypes. Really hope many more regional chieftains like Mr Rane will be written about : their contribution to nation building is immense. Delighted that the book has been released.
