While plant nurseries carry a vast array of Bougainvillea plants, I would not spend my money this way. If you wait till end of May to early June, you will find a lot of people who trim their overgrown Bougainvillea bushes and willingly allow you to take cuttings, because they have to dispose of the cuttings somehow. Take a 9 inch to 12 inch cutting, and stick it into the ground or a potting pot, making sure that you plant the right side up, and bingo, you will start seeing growth in a few weeks. Of course before the monsoon you have to water the plant till the monsoons arrive. I have found Bougainvilleas very easy to grow and require very little care, until the point when they have grown to big and need to be trimmed back.
A couple of homes which have masses of Bougainvillea in a variety of colors right now is
on the Kadamba depot road in Porvorim. If travelling from Panjim to Mapusa, you make
a right turn (the Holy Family Catholic Church is on the left), and go down that road for half a Km and you will find some colorful Bougainvillea bushes. You may ask the owner of the residence to let you know when they will be trimming their plants. I am sure that they will
oblige. Good luck !

Hello Hazel and Anita,
I must say both of you are a blessing - cause just yesterday I decided on planting as many bougainvilleas I can get hold of (especially white and deep maroon/red) for a huge boundry wall, would be thrilled to bits to have the colour I want - so if and when possible please either mail me or call me on 9422064541

Dears, Warm greetings. It is nice to see Hazel and Hitler Barros in this discussion on Bougainvilleas: their house in Mapusa is named just that, Bougainville. In Goa, we traditionally prune Bougainvillea plants just before the rains. The BSG Master Gardener, Nicholas Sequeira from Saligao, insists that the best time to prune Bougainvillea plants to induce profuse flowering is September! His plants have "more flowers than leaves". That the showy Bougainvillea "flowers" are actually "bracts" or modified leaves as in the gloriously red Poinsettias "flowers", is a Botanical detail that is of little interest to the gardeners. One can pick some bougainvillea plants with flowers at Friday Market in Mapusa, Duler Farm of Z.A.O. Mapusa or take a
risk with the colours at the Forest nursery at Campal-Panaji [between Children's Park and Kala Academy] Mog asundi |
