Dears,
I have finally received the official results of the competitions for school students held at the 20th FESTIVAL OF PLANTS & FLOWERS, at SFX High & Higher Secondary School, Siolim-Goa.
MEDICINE FROM PLANTS IN GOA:
Project included a potted medicinal plant, a poster with the technical details, the plant part used for medicine and actual medicine prepared, ready to use.
The home team of Conroy Camelo & Aditi Parulekar of SFX HS, Siolim picked the first spot.
Pratibha Gaunkar & Sweta Shettkar of Immaculate Conception High School, Dabal in the mining belt near Codli in Sanguem taluka, picked up the second prize.
Apurva Pangam & Kushboo Blaggan of St. John of the Cross, Sanquelim, a DSE school, picked up the third spot.
There were entries from other schools which were also very good. Unfortunately, everyone cannot get the prize.
The judges were Dr. A.Bondre from Ayurveda College, Shiroda-Ponda, and Mr. Francis Borges, from Chandor/Assagao who cured my wife of calor, rubor and sealed in pus in her elbow due to a bee sting using just a paste of Talkuli [Cassia tora that is abundant during the monsoons and eaten as vegetable during Shravan] ...where two doctors, one week of hospitalization and antibiotics failed. He was also one of the pioneers of going back to "Organic" in Goa about 25 years ago.

VEGETARIAN/SHRAVAN FOOD COMPETITION
This was a project to involve parents of students from SFX, Siolim, in the event and to make them to be a part of it. The food is also a wonderful way of treating the judges and guests to a delectable snack. The portion is small so as not to put a financial strain on the parents and to encourage greater participation. All food is vegetarian to be sensitive and respect the sentiment of the Shravan month.
1.Ms. Vaishali Parab, mother of Ria of Std. III-A
2.MS. Rajeshree Satardekar, mother of Rakshanda of Std. IX-C
3.Ms. Luisa Fernandes , mother of Ronan of Std. I-A
This was a competition open to all in the earlier years and prizes were often picked up by students of Bakery & Confectionery or Food Production at the HSS level.
St. Michael's High School, Vagator-Anjuna, is planning a similar festival at the end of September when I am scheduled to be away in Korea for the 17th Organic World Congress with organic farmers attending for the first time from India.
St. Bartholomew H S, Chorao, that has started the pre-vocational subject "Horticulture" instead of Mathematics in Std IX this year, will celebrate the Archdiocesan "Year of the Environment" in a more meaningful way with a plant show after the Diwali vacation. The management, staff and students are enthusiastic. Chorao is the island selected by a multi-organization group for development as a model island of organic farming. Work has been in progress for the last three years.
The major fire on the Naptha pipeline in Vasco yesterday is a sign of times when the "Real Estate" company Adventz has taken over Zuari Industries Ltd. located near the Dabolim airport. Fertilizers are not going to be around forever.

Dears,
Get ready to see a "Plant Show" in a school near you ... with assistance from you, who else?
The Botanical Society of Goa's PLANT UTSAV is going to make a comeback this year, too.

Festival of Plants & Flowers 2011, Goa
The 3-day 20th annual Festival of Plants and Flowers at SFX School, Siolim, Goa, India, was inaugurated by Mr Maendra Joslyn Alvares of "BIG Foot", on 13 August.
The theme this year is " Medicine from medicinal plants in Goa". Students from different schools presented projects on the medicinal uses of Goan plants along with a potted specimen of the plant. There were also on display of ornamental plants.
The Food & Drug Administration, Legal Metrology [Weights & Measures] of Goa and the PWD also participated besides several prominent Goa nurseries, selling ornamental plants , organic garden inputs including seeds, manures and insect repellents, panchagavya, EM, etc and books.
Begun by the SFX School's PTA and a few public spirited neighbours led by the indomitable cartoonist, Alexyz Fernandes, and guided by experienced horticulturist Miguel Braganza, this green event is now managed by the Eco Club with the whole hearted support of the Fransalians [MSFS] and their eco-Advisors Seby Diogo Pinto [who leads from the 'Forefront'] and Robert D' Mello. The Botanical Society of Goa, the Directorate of Agriculture's Zonal Agriculture Office-Mapusa and Vikas Nursery have always been a part of this festival since 1992.
