Dears,

It would be nice if each school raised seedlings of capsicum and tomato [on raised beds 1 metre wide and 1.5 to 2 metres long as per need as per procedure on pages 32 and 33 of the book GROWING VEGETABLES ORGANICALLY, also available for just Rs. 40/- at Green Essentials, Earthworm, Other India Bookstore and Varsha Bookstore]  and gave a seedling each to the interested students to take home and plant. If the school does not have appropriate space, one of the neighbours in the adjoining houses could requested to help. If the students are charged Rs.2/- per plant, it would defray the costs while giving the students a sense of ownership over the plant, too.

You could also buy seeds from the local dealer. The risk is that it may be treated with chemicals for storage. Wash hands after sowing treated seed.

Panchagavya [now available ready-mixed at Green Essentials] promotes germination and growth.

I have requested for some packets of Rhizobium culture to be brought for me from Bangalore in October. Those who have friends in Belgaum, Dharwad, Bangalore or elsewhere where Rhizobium is available can  get it for their legume [beans, cowpea, alsando, groundnut, etc]. No need of nitrogen fertiliser for two seasons once rhizobium is used for one legume crop.

    Thanks for all this information.

We did try to do some vegetable gardening at a school in Aldona this monsoon and discovered that 35 min slots are not ideal esp in the rains! But its a good idea to try again in winter and will see if it can be done during the work experience period.

I do hope some interested person can bring together a collection of local Goan seeds.

    Hi Sunita,
    Thanks for the information updates.
Regarding seeds. Would'nt it be wise to buy seeds with seeds packed with date of packing & expiery date(best before). Because as per my experience, new seeds will give good rate of germination. I am little cautious and reluctant with seeds without proper dates. It i best to save seed for 1self of the previous harvest and share the remaining. But what if i want to try some new crops?
    Pls. reply.
    Regards,
    Noel

    Dears,

What Yogita writes below is based on her own experience ...and that of others who have worked to CHANGE the way we DO things, not just speak or discuss them on the net.

Right now Yogita will be on her way back to Goa with five lady farmers from Chorao island after two days at Chetana Vikas, Wardha and a day at Subhash Sharma's farm at Yavatmal, both in Maharashtra state. It is a privilege to have a dynamic person like Yogita in the National Steering Committee of OFAI and the Chorao Farmers' Club as an institutional member.

Yogita also interacted with the PGS Organic Council of India Executive and farmers from Gomukh-Pune and Mumbai Village farmers' group. I came to Mumbai to interact with this group of young professionals-turned-farmers while Yogita and her group went to Yavatmal.

It is important to create a support group.

    Together Everyone Achieves More.

    Warm regards,

    Fredrick,

Thanks, and many of the ideas you have mentioned are very well put.

However, we have found that the first step into bringing these kinds of benefits to farmers, is to get a motivated group together and ensure that they are willing to work together for themselves and for each other over the long term.

In the absence of this collaboration I do not believe that any efforts made to improve the income of small and marginal farmers can be successful in the context of Goa even though there are many willing to help.

This is something that we are hoping to achieve through our activities at Chorao. We hope to be able to take these lessons, and share them with other groups that may be interested.

    Regards,
    Yogita

Yogita, You're doing a very good job of getting useful seeds into Goa! You will be doing a great favour to our farmers and horticulturists here. I wonder if we in this group could also brainstorm a bit to find solutions for our farmers, whose fields are caught between low productivity from rice, high labour costs, and unproductive returns.

In this 'knowledge era', they deserve the right inputs to help them shift to productive, sustainable and locally-useful crops too.  Miguel and others are specialist enough to help with their knowledge.

Recently, a young man from my village needed help to search the Net to find threshing machines (Japanese-made ones are available in Tamil Nadu). It is not surprising how much demand there is for useful information. Those of us who have access to the so-called information superhighway can help others to overcome barriers of language, lack-of-access etc that they face.

Keep up the good work you're doing! FN

Yes its important to have that seed information.

At Vanastree, we are still in the process of setting up seed saving, storage and packing protocols for our seed savers but the exp date is on the seed packet. You cannot buy gaonti seeds of all veggies too...like cauliflower, cabbage, beet etc since we have no known source here...so you need to buy regular hybrid seeds to grow them and you cannot save your own seeds since they will not seed in hot climates. But you will get organic veggies since shop bought ones (esp cabbage and cauliflower)contain huge amounts of pesticides.

    Happy seed saving.

    Dears,

A new friend I met through Dr. Mahadeo Pachegaonkar [75 years young and going strong] at the interaction on PGS organized by the National Centre of Organic Farming [NCOF] in Pune helped me get Rhizobium culture from the College of Agriculture, Pune. We will repack it for distribution free to those who wish to grow beans and other legumes this season.

Promoting gardening in a school involves understanding the school and its needs. Everything works best with a SWOT test [Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Risks] and SMART objectives [Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Replicable and Time-bound]. In one project that I was a part of from last October, the SMARTness eluded us because the support group never jelled. That is what Yogita has referred to elsewher that Ihave also responded to.

A friend and mentor, Dr. Sultan Ismail wrote to me recently thus: SUCCESS is moving from one failure to another without loss in ENTHUSIASM ..... till one succeeds.
