Hi

I am a beginner at gardening and manage my plants from my little
terrace. Most of the plants are ornamental along with some mint and
lemongrass. thankfully they are all healthy which is giving me
confidence to experiment a little, except that I have tried almost 5-6
times to grow basil in a long deep planter, but all my attempts have
failed. drying seeds, planting stem, moist soil, dry soil, indoors,
outdoors... could someone please help. from videos on you-tube it
seems fairly simple, but i am guessing goa weather is not suitable. i
hope my logic is wrong and that there is a sure shot way of growing
basil.

Hi Garima,

An aunt of my friend, who has a green thumb, and lives in Porvorim,
and has grown every imaginable plant, has tried growing basil and
failed. Anyway it doesn't grow well in the rains. I also think it
needs a cooler climate. But I am not even a beginner.

Smiles,

Anjuli

Hello Garima,

If tulsi can grow in goa - so can basil (they are sisters).

I have successfully neglected my basil plant all through this wild
monsoon that we've had - and it's doing just fine.

The trick is, I guess, to ensure it has sufficient sunlight, rich and
well drained soil, and of-course - regular water.

I've grown it is regular pots (plastic/mud) and it seems to have
worked. I've tried seeds - they germinate pretty quickly - say in 3-4
days. Or I've often broken healthy stems at the node and stuck them
into the ground to make more basil babies - that works too.

If you want a basil plant, let me know - I'll make one for you.

we have no trouble growing all kinds of basil (lemon basil, italian sweet basil, thai basil, and purple basil) in Valpoi Goa. To ensure they do well over the monsoon, keep them near a window and indoors. water only when the soil becomes dryish or even dry. water from the top, and not in a tray at the base. water such that no extra comes out into the tray below.
best of luck

I'm so glad that someone has had success with basil. Sufficient
sunlight, well drained soil; well I, in Dhargal, haven't seen such
conditions since the middle of June.

Tulsi may be basil's sister, but very very hardy compared to basil. So
the comparisons, as they say, are odious.

But, Garima, I hope you have success with your basil; then you can give me some.

Cheers.

Thank you so much for replying.

@Anjuli: your trick of storing basil leaves in plstic bag and
refrigerating is working fine :) about having fresh stock from my
plant reminds me, you must visit us soon, about to change apartments.
n before that i want you to see my plants in full glory here. the new
place doesn't have the same charm. shooting a pesonal mail on that
one.

@Yogita: could i ask for more? i would love to have a ready made
plant, though i don't mind put in some work myself if needed. how do i
get in touch with you. where do u live? m in porvorim.

while i was waiting for a reply on this forum, i got in touch with
someone who held a workshop in bombay last week on growing herbs. She
suggested i could put a fresh twig in water, and it should grow roots
in sometime. seeds ofcourse should work, if only i knew where to get
them in goa. any suggestions? the nurseries i've been to on NH-17
hardly ever know about basil.

@clea: i had no idea, there were so many varities of basil. I shall
try growing just 'basil' first, and then would love to get back in
touch with you to learn more.

Regards
Garima

yes one cant compare tulsi with basil! They have been apart, one mainly in italy and the other in india , and adapting to different conditions for a long time now. Nevertheless, basil is actually easy to grow in goa. It just has to be done indoors over the monsoon. It thrives after the monsoon outdoors.

Where is Annadana?

Suggestion for members on this group: How about compiling a list of
nurseries and seed vendors in goa. i wouldn't mind preparing one on
nurseries in and around my area (porvorim) with the kind of plants
they keep in stock. it could be a useful database.

I'd like one too, yogita, if you don't mind?
