History of the deptt
the Department of Ophthalmology was started as an independent unit in
1916 with Prof AEJ Lister as the Head, and 1 lecturer. Subsequently,
major developments took place in the 1920s and 1930s under Dr BGS
Acharya. It is one of oldest departments of Ophthalmology in the
country, and one of the first to introduce the course of MS
(Ophthalmology) in 1935. The DOMS (Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine &
Surgery) course was started in 1951. The department has a separate
building (New Ophthalmic Block) which was commissioned in 1955.
Presently there are 6 seats each annually for the MS and DOMS courses.

we can be one of the largest alumni in ophthalmology,so lets get
together .....puneet

such people can become member , i personally feel there is no
harm ,since they are alumni of kgmc ,but let us decide it on 14th nov

formation and running of this alumni, so lets wait till then ,bye,

Since it is group of Ophthalmologist from KGMC i think people who had
done their p.G. from KGMC should be entitled to join this group.

To this history of the deptt. I would like to add a few (irrelevant) details about Prof BGS Acharya who was a tamilian and somehow came to Lucknow, but he did not stay for long (probably due to departmental politics). He was the grand uncle of Mrs. Vasanthi Badrinath (wife of Dr.S.S.Badrinath, founder of Sankara Nethralaya) He was also a good friend of my grand father, late Dr.Hansraj who was the Founder & Head of the eye deptt at the Balrampur Eye Hospital. Dr Acharya left after serving as the head of KGMC eye deptt for a few years only and before leaving sold all his equipment like ophthalmoscope, retinoscope, trail lenses etc to my grand father and we later donated the same to the Sankara Nethralaya museum of ophthalmic artifacts.

I just googled Dr. BSG Acharya who is my Great Grand father (my Nanaji's father) and was pleasantly surprised to see his mention in a few places. Proud of what he was able to achieve in those times.Mr/Dr. Hansraj-it was a pleasure to read about your family too.I am trying to get my hands on a copy of a book written by him. CAn anybody help me out with that?
