Dear members,

There's an announcement that Indian archives have made numerous papers available online. Here is the link. I've tried to register but no success as yet.

All best,
Selma

Nobody will be able to register because there is a bug in the entry form.
If one observes carefully at the registration form's email field, the phone number is repeated multiple times on that field. At least it was in my case... so the variable value stored there in the email ID field is meaningless...
Usually all these India government sites have a lot of bugs because nobody checks any code, no testing at all as there is zero quality checks.
This is typical of governmental sites where the interface looks very basic, lots of grammatical errors and poor QA.
I am not surprised as this fundamentalist government in power has the habit of providing jobs to their supporters, many of whom are not qualified to do their job in the first place.
Everywhere one looks, just everywhere, it is the same thing.
I have emailed them, but wonder if anybody is going to read it, emails requesting help usually get lost in the system...

I too found it was cumbersome. Good to have complained.

Problems with Abhilekh Patal: National Archives of India online websiteJames Jaffe03/01/2023Discussion

There always have problems when ordering copies of documents through the NAI website Abhilekh Patal. However, these problems seem to have increased dramatically of late. Has anyone else experienced similar problems when trying to pay for documents to be copied from the Archives? I have been trying to pay for copies for more than a week now without success. Every imaginable form of credit card receives a "transaction failure" notice due to a problem with "parameters." The webmaster there does not respond to emails. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Many thanks.

India supplies the world with its technocrats and yet it has the worst portals. I am still trying to recover mentally from my torturous time at Goa archives where I was reduced to tears by the attitude of the people. Physical archives or online archives, they have one thing in common, there are bugs everywhere.

All best,
Selma

The best solution would be to fire all these incompetent morons who are working in setting up these governmental websites and then ask the likes of Dr S. Somanath from ISRO to lend some of their crack coders to help resolve the situation.
It is disgraceful an unacceptable that the public have to put up with needless waste of time due to mediocre work of others - paid to do the work in the first place and draw a pension later in life for their great 'work'!
We can do code to land on the Moon and Mars but can't do simple code to allow researchers to register for an Archives account.
🙁

Bugs? I think that's a feature....
In a society where knowledge blocks have long been used to implement successful control, limiting access can be a crucial goal.
Some are also Gandhians in the worst possible interpretation of that ideology -- they are Champions of the Non-Cooperation Movement (though in post-colonial times). FN
PS: Something on as simple as granting ISBN numbers to books ran into huge, huge problems... especially after the process was digitised and taken online!  Hard to believe but true. See https://thewire.in/books/indian-publishers-face-delays-fear-censorship-governments-isbn-rules-become-complex

Fred,
One can blow a physical bug away, and the document will be free from that bug, hence available for reference.
However with digital documents, a 'bug' there will prevent everybody from accessing it. It is not about control but about incompetence.
Besides bugs, I have found parasites at the Archives where they demanded bribes to see documents.
Glad that parasite is there no more, good riddance.
