Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news, one of our active members of this group -- Valmiki Faleiro -- passed away suddenly this afternoon (Thursday, Oct 5, 2023). This came about due to a heart attack this afternoon. The news came as a shock here.
Valmiki was active in the world of journalism from the 1970s, and has been an author since 2010. His third book Goa, 1961 was published in New Delhi recently and was getting widely noticed.  Valmiki was about 70. Just to share the initial news on this group. Funeral details are awaited.

Valmiki's loss is irreplaceable not just to Goa but to me personally. A dear friend, who remained so over the years, it was he who encouraged me to write seriously about 18 years ago and got me my first writing assignment at Heraldo Goa. His knowledge about Margao was encyclopaedic and at any given point he was working on a Margao book which sadly did not come to fruition. But he was very proud of his latest publication by Penguin India. I chatted with him over email just a week ago, his response right on top of my inbox. His demise is shocking and leaves a huge hole in all our lives.

In condolence,
Selma

Yes, terrible and unexpected news Fred. Valmiki was a good friend to many of us and a hard working and generous researcher, always thinking in his next project. I will miss his kind friendship. My sincere condolences to his family.

This is such devastating news with the only bright spot for me being the autographed book that he sent me to NY via Vivek. I will sorely miss him.
After going through the book and realizing how important it is for Goans (including me) to know their history, none of which is/was taught in school, I had suggested to Valmiki that we find a young person who can summarize bits from his book and send them via Whatsapp the only medium via which most Goans seem to get their information from, unfortunately not always accurate.

I got this idea from  historian Heather Cox Richardson's Letters From an American https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heather_Cox_Richardson who during the terrible Trump days a started a small newsletter (most recent link) https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/october-3-2023 where she explained (with links) the various political swings we were going through, the court cases filed against his policies and how the constitution is relevant. She still continues this highly successful enterprise. Instead of a blog I suggested small pieces from the book, Chapter by Chapter, in simple English, with his name of course.
His reply: “ Your suggestion is excellent: but do we have a person to undertake serialisation in parts? Today's generation is forever in a hurry -- though few arrive on time :-)”
I had recently thought of someone who could do this and perhaps I will pursue it in his memory.
As Vivek said just now 'May his memory be a blessing'.

I am immensely saddened, and still in shock. I never met Valmiki in person, but we were put in contact with each other by a mutual friend because we had common areas of interest and were able to help each other with research materials. He knew immeasurably more than me, but I had access to the deep pockets of our libraries here in the US, and was able to be of some little help on an occasion or two. More importantly, I think we became friends over the course of many in-depth conversations over the years. “You can trust me,” I remember him writing in one of our last exchanges. And I had not one iota of doubt that I could. Great researchers and excellent writers are not easy to find. Authentic human beings are even rarer, I think. The loss of somebody who combined all these attributes is truly a tragedy.

Sad day in fact that someone who pursued Goa's history very passionately and religiously has departed from our midst. This group will definitely miss him deeply for giving so much for us to learn and think over in the books he wrote. His great contribution will remain as a testimony to his remarkable work, and I hope that at least a few members of the younger generation of researchers pick up from where Valmiki left his work, as Fred, on another group, mentioned the names of the books. I had few email correspondence with him, and he informed me that the book is available on Amazon. However, I didn't order it, as I was planning to go to Goa this year or early next year.

Very saddened to hear this news.
His name was synonymous to great journalism and book writing recently.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
I was looking forward to meeting up Valmiki early next year to discuss some specific aspects of the 1961 related events and get the book signed by him...
Thanks for reporting Fred.
