António Luís Santos da Costa is a Portuguese lawyer and politician who has presided over the Council of Europe since 2024. Previously, he was Prime Minister of Portugal from 2015 to 2024.
His great-grandfather was born in Goa, his grandfather lived in Mozambique and married a woman from Mauritius, and his father, Orlando Costa, born in Mozambique, studied at the University of Lisbon and authored the books O Signo da Ira. A Estrada e a Voz, Os Olhos sem fronteira e Sete Odes do Canto Comum e Podem chamar-me Eurídice.
His family lineage, which originated in India (Goa), passed through Mozambique and then Portugal, and he personally returned to India on Republic Day as a VIP guest. Such are the twists and turns of life, a mystery of unpredictability.
It was a unique and historic moment for him. He witnessed in Kartavya Path (Path of duty, and formerly known as Rajpath ) the largest military parade he had ever seen.
In 1992, another guest from Portugal, President Mário Soares, was in the same place.
