“Somewhere tucked away in a folder or file is evidence that someone existed, resisted and endure.jpg

FROM THE XCHR: The Ramponkar Movement, which emerged in the late 1970s and intensified throughout the 1980s, was one of Goa's most significant people's movements, combining the defence of traditional fishing livelihoods with a sustained struggle for ecological conservation and social justice.

Siya Sukhtankar (Indian Institute of Management Shillong) is presently undertaking an internship at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Porvorim, where she is cataloguing the archival collection related to the Ramponkar Movement assembled by Braz Faleiro SJ.

I was part of Ramponnkarancho Ekvott and from Bangalore I helped John Devraj become part of it in Coastal Canara among fishermen, esp. Kharvi of the northern part of Kanara for a long time. It was a team at the Brothers of Holy Cross, CSC, where I was in the late seventies. Later they shifted to working for the street beggars of Bangalore and organised their own theatrical show reported from the streets. John, his family of the Devraj and friends were part of the entire Kanara Fishermen's movement for the traditional fisherman against the mechanised fishing industry.
From 1988 until 1997 I was at the Jesuit House, Panaji, where Fr. Braz Faleiro was superior, working with many, one of them a lecturer from Salesian College, who later joined the politics of Goa and the CPM workers' movement with its leader and his wife. That was what I wanted to write about on Panaji and GU etc.

WRdeS, Were the CSC then on St Mark's Road?
Braz Faleiro SJ talks about his experiences is this audio interview (conducted separately, and not as part of the Ramponkars' Archive... the latter is a good initiative) when I met him just in time to download his memories of those times: https://archive.org/details/fr-braz-faleiro
He talks about the teacher in question (whom everyone here knows is Matanhy, but with the Salesian school, rather than college). Also Christopher Fonseca, whom I guess you're referring to, was part of the CPI (not CPM, a big difference in those days when the Left was influential but prone to a whole lot of factionalism).
As far as Matanhy goes, he told me very clearly during the Protect Waters Protect Life March (circa 1986-1987, not sure of the exact year) that he didn't consider his politics to be anywhere remotely Leftwing, though he did participate and lead a number of protest and subaltern movements of that era.
This history is waiting to be collated and narrated in more detail. One recent attempt (via the Polis Project) is here... but am not sure how much of the story gets documented:  https://thepolisproject.com/read/goa-communism-forgotten-history/  FN
