Invitation to the Conclave on 'Art and Politics of Cartooning in India' under Mario Miranda Chair 27th March,2026, Goa University
Dear Sir/Madam,
The art of Mario Miranda, one of India’s most illustrious artists, cartoonist and illustrator, has influenced an entire generation, locally, nationally and globally. His work covered people, places, and ideas across space and time, retaining a certain rootedness that enabled his characters to reflect the seriousness as well as the light-heartedness of human existence. His message connected remarkably well with both experts and lay admirers of the art. For some, Mario’s remarkable ability was to see life as a detached observer. As editor Vinod Mehta said, “Mario celebrates human frailty. None of us, he says, is perfect…..(He) asks us not to succumb to despair or cynicism. Tomorrow is another day... In short, he makes a plea for tolerance and understanding - and optimism.” According to poet Nissim Ezekiel, “his cartoons do not denounce or analyse. To his intensely individual vision, life is funny, and that is all. It is enough for him.”
The birth Centenary year of Mario Miranda is the most opportune occasion to celebrate the art, life and thoughts of one of India’s greatest icons. The Mario Miranda Chair at Goa University, in collaboration with the discipline of Political Science, wishes to celebrate this occasion by organising a conclave on ‘ Art and Politics of Cartooning in India’ on 27th March 2026, at the Seminar Hall, Social Science Faculty Block B, from 10.A.M. onwards.
