Dear Victor,
Unfortunately Professor Rodrigues died in 2014. I sent his obituary because it describes his remarkable career. Another distinguished Goan who was a respected Professor at Georgetown University was Joaquim de Sequeira Coutinho. He was Professor of Portuguese, had visited Goa, and I had the pleasure of meeting him in the US. Here is his bio. The bio incorrectly says he was of Portuguese descent.
Many Goans distinguished themselves as Professors of Portuguese and experts in Portuguese literature outside Portugal. Vicente de Bragança Cunha was one of them.
Best regards,
John M. de Figueiredo

There's an interesting thread on Joaquim Xavier Otto de Siqueira Coutinho here:

Going back to 2019, with a lot of surprising pointers from Sandra Ataíde Lobo.
Don't miss it. You might be surprised by what you read there. FN

Thanks, John, I'll try to be more 'awake' when reading my emails. Not easy, at my age!
Warmest regards,
Victor

END QUOTE

As Sandra wrote in the Goa Book Club in May 2019: ""What many may not know is that a son of Goa played an important role in saving the manuscript of his book on the 1857 Revolt." That's very interesting -- who was it?" She was referring to Otto Coutinho!

According to Scholberg et al, Savarkar published a 232 page poem (probably a historical novel) *Gomantaka (Aitihasika Kavya) in 1934 under the pseudonym 'Maharashtra Bhat'.
They translate the title of the book as *Goa. (A historical poem)*. Has anyone seen it or got access?

These two books by Savarkar (on Goa) seem to be rather different. One is a novel, and the other is a poem. Can anyone explain the connection?

Gomantak: a novel on Goa by Veer Savarkar

His father, João António Valeriano Coutinho, from Aldona, was a graduate of Escola Médica and a public health officer in Cabo Verde. Like Dr. Socrates da Costa, he protested against certain injustices committed against Goan doctors.
His sister, Maria Luisa de Sequeira Coutinho, was an accomplished pianist and writer.
It is not correct that he never returned to India. After he was settled and successful in the US he visited Goa and gave a lecture at the Instituto Vasco da Gama. I was a child, then, and cannot recall the topic, but I remember the lecture was well received and made the headlines of some of the local papers.
Much later I met him in the US when we were both in Washington. He was a polyglot and he showed me his great collection of books on the history, language, and literature of Portugal. A real gentleman and scholar. I did not know about his political past and we never discussed politics.
Not much has been written about this distinguished son of Goa. Aleixo Manuel da Costa mentions his sister, but not him, in his encyclopedia “Dicionário de Literatura Goesa”.
