A founding faculty member of the Foreign Service School in 1919, Coutinho spent almost 50 years at Georgetown teaching geopolitics, Portuguese, and geography. In 1955, Coutinho, Portuguese by descent, was honored by the Pan American Institute with the Distinguished Service Medal for his efforts to improve relations between the U.S., Brazil, and Portugal.
