The foreign constitution of 1933 imposed by Salazar on the Goans, threw them into the abyss of an iron dictatorship that did not allow any political, economic, cultural advancement, etc. These Goans were part of the Indian people who had not yet been liberated. They went through prisons, extreme poverty, racism, tribulation for the Hindu majority.

Salazar considered himself a messianic leader, therefore, with his doctrine of propagating “Western civilization” he intended to “domesticate the wild indigenous people”.

Shortly after World War II, all colonized peoples have vowed to destroy colonizing forces wherever it exists.

In India, already free from the British colonial yoke, the democratic constitution of 1950 gave full freedom to its citizens. The Goans, for example, living in Mumbay (Bombay), knew what a democracy was.

On December 19, 1961, the mighty Indian army serving the largest democracy in the world came with the 1950 constitution, making the 1933 constitution obsolete, which, curiously, even for Western Europe was completely “prehistoric”.

Few Christian batkars (landlords) opposed liberation, and the Hindu majority was clearly supportive of their integration into Mother India, and among the Christian minority, hostility to the Portuguese colonizer and the desire for association with India predominated, even though, for some, with a status of autonomy that preserves Goan specificity. There were, in addition to the batkars, groups of “descendants” from Goa and the small mixed-race community of Daman who opposed the liberation. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of Goans would celebrate the advance of the Indian army as a liberation.

After the liberation, this submissive insignificant minority, settled mainly in Portugal and the colony of Mozambique, came up with plan B, the utopian independence that vanished after the military coup in Lisbon in 1974. Two former members of the Casa de Goa from Lisbon told me that, as a last resort, after its foundation in the early years, this Casa emerged as a kind of Trojan horse to pinch the government of the state of Goa. This was also the perception of some Goans who came from the colony of Mozambique. Therefore, they did not join massively as members and, in parallel, founded ARCIP (Associação Recreativa Cultural Indo-Portuguesa). After 1961, the Indian state of Goa elected native Konkani-speaking leaders and no longer had foreign governors-general and foreign bishops who only spoke Portuguese, a language unknown to the majority of the native population.

The Constitution of India is the fundamental and supreme law of India. The document establishes the framework that demarcates the fundamental political code, structure, procedures, powers and duties of government institutions and establishes the fundamental rights, guiding principles and duties of citizens. The Magna Carta. It is a permanent plebiscite, a participatory democracy.
Does democracy have flaws? Winston Churchill once said that “democracy is the worst regime except for all the others.”

Since 1991, India has risen economically very robustly, becoming the 3rd highest GDP in Asia. It benefited a large number of Goans. Which are the top 5 GDP countries in the world? The US, China, Japan, Germany, and India, respectively, hold those positions in 2023. According to IMF data.

Goa is neither Gaza strip, nor Somalia, nor Sudan, nor East Timor. Timor-Leste is the Least Developed Country and is heavily dependent on Indonesia according to the World Bank. And what about Macau and H.Kong integrated into China?

On this day of liberation of Goa :“-Jai Hind”.

Pedro,

I respect your opinions, even if they may sound a bit extreme. But let me remind you that the "submissive insignificant minority" has given Portugal some of its most notable people, including the still Prime-Minister of Portugal. Maybe Goa lost something when that "insignificant minority" left Goa to join the country they had come to accept as theirs. I wish that prior to 1961 we had been able to find an alternative acceptable to the vast majority of Goans, but clearly we weren't enlightened enough to find it...

All the best to you, to Goa and all Goans

Nuno

Portuguese considered Goans as fisrt class citizens, with the same rights as European Portuguese.
Portugal government was, from 1928 to 1974, a fascist government but Goans were treated as first class citizens.
Goan people didn't fight against the Portuguese. The majority of Goans liked Portugue people, as they were treated as equals.
Most of Goan freedom fighters didn't fight against the Portuguese, they are oportunist who just wanted benefits.
A fellow who was in prision because he was a gay when he was realesed h became a famous freedom fighter, saying he went to jail on account of political reasons. Of course, some were  realy brave and fought the Portuguese regime.
In 19 thDecember 1961, there was more fear than joy.

If this is true, why didn't Nehru keep his promise of allowing the Goan people to decide his own destiny? In the last years of the fifties, Nehru said goans were differents and they should be allowed to exercise the right of self determination,

If this is true, why do so many people make ques in front of Portuguese Consulate in Goa to be Portuguese nationals so that they may leave the "rich"India and be able to get decent jobs in Europe?
Two former members of the Casa de Goa from Lisbon told me that, as a last resort, after its foundation in the early years, this Casa emerged as a kind of Trojan horse to pinch the government of the state of Goa.
As former President of Casa de Goa of Lisbon, I can assure the group that all of us always recognize Goa as an integrant part of India and it must always be part of India, as it is not possible to ignore the present and the reality of the 21 st century.
What most of us think is that Goa was invaded in 1961. In fact, Supreme Court of India stated that it was an invasion. What we think is a historical fact that cannot be denied.
And what about Macau and H.Kong integrated into China?
Macau and Hong Kong integratiion in China only shows that an expansionist country like China doesn't allow people of other small territories to exercise the right of self determination.
Honk Kong could be independent, as Singapore is...

Nuno, did you say António Costa?  Costa never belonged to the group of submissives who left Goa. He was born in Portugal.

Well, António Costa apologizes for the Wiriamu massacre: “Inexcusable act that dishonors our History”

“I cannot fail to evoke and bow before the memory of the victims of the Wiriamu massacre, an inexcusable act that dishonors our History”, stated the Prime Minister of Portugal, before the President of the Republic of Mozambique, in Maputo.

António Costa pede desculpa por massacre de Wiriamu: “Acto indesculpável que desonra a nossa História”

Not one sentence about the fascism of the ditador provinciano, Salazar, and not one sentence about colonialism. There is a lot of envy when talking about India: One of the world's great economies, and……a nuclear and space power.

(……The majority of Goans liked Portugue people, as they were treated as equals……)

Is not true. And the hindus? Read statements from the LEGALLY elected chief minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant :- «Signs of the centuries-long colonial Portuguese occupation should be “wiped away” from Goa, according to the chief minister of India’s most popular coastal tourist destination. Pramod Sawant made the comments in a fiery speech on Tuesday in reaction to claims that Hindu temples were destroyed in the state during Portuguese rule».

(….In 19 thDecember 1961, there was more fear than joy…….)

True, the badkars and collaborationists trembled and fled into the arms of Salazar in Lisbon.

(….leave the "rich"India and be able to get decent jobs in Europe…..)

Decent ? The life of Goans working in the UK is not the bed the bed of roses as it is assumed, they have to face a lot of challenges while working and staying there. Right from the cost of living to the work environment is very harsh there compared to our country, but despite of that they still prefer to migrate to the European Countries with the help of Portuguese Passport. Here in this piece of article, we have tried to put some light on the challenges faced by Goans living in the UK.  (1)

Employment Rate: India- 7.1% ;  Spain: 11.84 % , Euro Area : 605 %. (2)

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Macau and Hong Kong integratiion in China only shows that an expansionist country

TRUE. China is COMMUNIST. The colony was expanded further in 1898 when the United Kingdom obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories.

Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I will not waste any more time arguing because the Indian flag flies high in Goa. We should not beat the defeated.

Finally, let   me wish you all a merry Christmas ana happy New Year.

Pedro,
So, Goans who were born in Portugal are not "proper" Goans... And António Costa's father was born in Goa...

As to the Wiriamu killings, they were disgraceful to all of us, no matter what we thought of trying to keep the association of the Overseas Provinces with Portugal. But it may interest you to know that the incident was caused by local Mozambican units of the Portuguese army...As so often happens in Africa, maybe some local ethnic differences may have played a part in this disgraceful event.

“The batkars and collaborationists trembled, and fell into the arms of Salazar in Lisbon.”
I did not know that Dr. Rama Hegde, who spent years in jail in Portugal, Dr. Morto’ Dessai, and Dr. Vamona Sinari, all of whom chose to leave Goa and go to Portugal, were “batkars” and “collaborationists”.

Defeated?
I fought against colonualims and fascism.
And you? What have you done?

I also have to say that Prime Minister Modi stated that cooperation between  democratic Portugal and India should increase and also that Portuguese cultural legacy in Goa should be preserved.
