The Amphibious Goan Identity

Writer Selma Carvalho and Prof. R. Benedito Ferrão will be discussing their writing featured in The Brave New World of Goan Writing & Art 2025 anthology, as well as Carvalho’s upcoming book, Half-Caste and Empire: Goans in Zanzibar, 1860-1910 (Speaking Tiger), and Ferrão’s new book, Across Continents: Writing Goans, Making Worlds (University of Michigan Press). Their work touches on various aspects of the Goan experience, including the amphibious nature of Goan identity, slavery and racism.

Selma Carvalho

Selma Carvalho is the author of two novellas, the editor of three volumes of The Brave New World of Goan Writing & Art, and a researcher of the Goan presence in East Africa. She headed the UK HLF-grant funded project documenting the histories of Goans who lived in East Africa. Her works include three non-fiction books, and her upcoming book is titled, Half-Caste and Empire: Goans in Zanzibar, 1860-1910 published by Speaking Tiger.


R. Benedito Ferrão

R. Benedito Ferrão is an Associate Professor of English and Asian & Pacific Islander American Studies at William & Mary. He is a curator, having collaborated with artists Karishma D’Souza, Angela Ferrão and Vamona Navelcar. His organised shows include the exhibition titled, Goa, Portugal, Mozambique: The Many Lives of Vamona Navelcar (2017-2018), also the title of his edited book. Forthcoming in 2026, is his curation of Maria Vanessa de Sa’s first solo exhibition, The Girl Who was the Color of Nothing, which is also the title of a children’s book he has co-created with the artist. His monograph on literary representations of Goan displacement is titled, Across Continents: Writing Goans, Making Worlds will be released in 2026 by University of Michigan Press.
