I am pleased to introduce my book Guts, Glory and Empire: The epic story of Goans in Zanzibar, 1865-1910 published by Speaking Tiger.
This book is four years in the making, spanning archival and field research in Goa, Britain, Portugal and Zanzibar. It will hopefully change how we view the South Asian interlude in Africa but more importantly how we come to view 19th century Goan society. It's a rare glimpse into Goa society's encounters with racism, subjecthood, autonomy and achievement.
Key words: Indian Ocean histories, migration, diaspora, Portuguese studies, African studies, colonial studies, racism, identity, migration, society, clubs, and gender issues.
