Dear Members of the Goa Research Net,

I trust this email finds you well.

I'm Bernice de Souza, and I work at the Centre for Public Policy & Governance (CPPG), Goa Institute of Management (GIM).

At the CPPG, we are looking to gain a deeper understanding of 'The Communidade System in Goa'...The origins, historical aspects, the institution, the current scenario, legal side, tracing the evolution and changes that this system has been through since its inception, the challenges today, the relationship between communidade lands and khazan lands, water bodies, communidade lands vis-à-vis the current regional plans, land ownership and land-use patterns, agricultural practices etc. and a whole range of associated factors and issues.

Our aim in doing so is to build a repository of information that we can study and think through with the hope that we can build this into a half-day seminar or discussion and perhaps come out with a short piece.

I would be much obliged if members on the group could kindly point me toward some key sources on this theme – academic literature, publications, books, authors/scholars who have written on the theme, individuals who have worked in this space and understand the nitty-gritties, any other resources, information, documents etc.

If any of you have any publications, references etc. it would be wonderful, if you could kindly share the same with me.

In case any of the members of the group, have worked/written on this topic or are engaged in this space in any form, we would be happy to setup a quick online chat.

Kindly do feel free to contact me (ber...@gim.ac.in ; +91 9923693329

Many thanks & kind regards,

Bernice de Souza,

Senior Research Associate,

Centre for Public Policy & Governance,

Goa Institute of Management

Hi Bernice,
One exhaustive publication is 'As Confrarias de Goa - seculos XVI-XX conspecto historico-juridico' which is partly related to your work.
I have a hard copy but have only referred to a few pages.
You can find an online version of it here:

Joao Paulo

When I was at Goa University (from 1988-1997) I had many lectures,
seminar sessions and field research workshops on comunidades, a
Portuguese reconstruction of gaumponn and gauvkari. Confrariasth was a
Portuguese invention with religious overtones associated with churches
and lay leaders. Living in the Jesuit House I was in contact with Fr.
Romuald de Souza, founder of GIM, and had some sessions there too with
statistics etc. and khazan, mitt production and manus bunding. MA
students had worked on their essays for mittgauddo, gaumponn and their
regular sessions of discussion and partition of products etc. The
low-lying Manddovi and Zuari were the geological reasons for this type
of farming, fishing, salt production etc. One student completed his Ph
D later on mittgauddo and did post-doctoral work. Another two worked
on lower caste social life, the cattle keepers etc. They will be in
Goa as professors and with more research work. A lecturer from MSc,
working in mycology or allmim, had produced a report for the
government on Comunidades. He is Dr. Nandakumar Kamat. The work he
wrote must be in the Goa Uni Library and Central Library. I have it
all in my archives, but to search for that material might be a bit
strenuous at present. Fr Monteiro has recently completed a monograph
on this theme. I have a copy sent to me. I could make myself available
on WhatsApp video to discuss the themes at 9980323912. I am in
Vidyagiri, Mudubidri, at Alvas College in Dakshina Kannada.
All the best for your research.

Rui Gomes Pereira has done good work on it - available at the Central Library. Remy Dias’ thesis is online on the shodhganga portal.
