The Portuguese Language in Goa
Memory and Postcolonial Inheritance

Once the language of power, Portuguese in Goa today survives largely in fragments. Yet it endures in memory, in the desire to use it whenever possible, and even in the regret of those who never had the chance to learn it. In 2026, how do these legacies shape Goa’s present?

This conversation engages with these questions while also introducing a new book. Lusophone Goa: Tracing the Portuguese Language brings together 45 diverse voices, each offering distinct perspectives and themes. To understand the Portuguese language in Goa, it is necessary to hear these varied and sometimes conflicting viewpoints, which together explore a legacy that is centuries old, richly layered, and under pressure in contemporary life. These memories cut across generations, geographies, personal histories, experiences of migration, and social communities. They include the voices of academics and professionals, as well as artists, students, and everyday speakers. In a deeply multilingual society, this session turns attention to a language that is often overlooked, partly because its historical and cultural role in Goa remains insufficiently understood, even when that role is contested.

Aren Noronha

Aren Noronha is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Portuguese and Lusophone Studies at Goa University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, with academic interests spanning global history, Indo-Portuguese studies, intercultural exchange, and media studies. His interdisciplinary interests extend to electronic music composition, instrumental performance (piano and guitar), and engagement with open-source software and digital technologies. He is deeply interested in reading, continuous learning, and cross-cultural encounters.

Delfim Correia da Silva

Delfim Correia da Silva is Visiting Lecturer under the Indo-Portuguese CEP, and Coordinator of the Cunha Rivara Chair at the University of Goa. He is also Director of Camões–CLP, Panjim. He has long experience in teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE) abroad and has spent several years in Goa engaged in the teaching of the Portuguese language and the promotion of Portuguese culture. He was in charge of the Department of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies at Goa University from 2009 to 2018, and previously served as Visiting Lecturer at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (1996–2001), and at St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, Bulgaria (2002–2006). The Camões–CLP under his leadership focuses primarily on the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language and collaborates through cooperation protocols and institutional partnerships with local educational institutions, as well as, on occasion, with institutions in neighbouring states.

Constâncio Cecil De Melo

Constâncio Cecil De Melo, born in Goa and educated in Bombay, holds a degree in English Literature and Psychology from St. Xavier’s College, Bombay, and a postgraduate qualification in Marketing from NMIMS. He has also studied German and Portuguese. His professional career includes extensive experience in print media with The Times of India, The Indian Express, and India Today, as well as over a decade in London working in the media and food sectors, including stints in Portugal with Subcontinent, Ithaca, and SPG Media. He currently teaches at two institutions in Goa and is involved in private tutoring and the food business.

Loraine Ethel Barreto Alberto

Loraine Ethel Barreto Alberto is an Assistant Professor and Programme Director of the Master’s Programme in the Discipline of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies at the Shenoi Goembab School of Languages and Literature, Goa University. She has an enduring passion for teaching and researching Goan literature in Portuguese and culture studies, alongside her commitment to teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. Her research interests include the historical press in Goa and Camonian studies.
