Goa University has decided to constitute a Multidisciplinary Cluster on Mhadei (MCM) as a cross disciplinary initiative across various schools of Goa University. The same has been approved by higher authorities, it was announced here.
The MCM shall strive to be an academic platform, hoping to study the river Mhadei in its diverse manifestations, of which the proposed diversion will be an important but not the only one.The Cluster shall hold regular talks, workshops, studies etc, which will focus on the ecological, hydrological, cultural, political and legal contexts shaping the past, present and future of the river. One of the objectives will also be to provide a well researched input and policy advice to the Government of Goa.
"We invite all the faculty colleagues/research scholars with an interest and work on any of the above areas relating to Mhadei to join the cluster and add value to the initiative," said a statement from Prof Rahul Tripathi  r...@unigoa.ac.in

Is the river Mhadei the same as Mandovi?
If so, why are they not calling it Mandovi?

Mandovi is the sensible name for it but i
was the beginning of a process to “remove Portuguese influence and culture” by calling it Mhadei.

If in some weird reality the Portuguese were to recolonize Goa, those same Caros, Dempos and Bhornos who quickly changed their names to Karés, Dempés and Bharnés would as quickly revert to their Portuguese versions without as much as batting an eyelid.

Also street and building name changes from the British-ruled India and Portuguese-ruled Goa versions merely meant the streets became dirtier and messier and buildings became more dilapidated than ever.

Roland.

In the upper reaches of the Sattari valley, this river is called the Mhadei (meaning Great Mother). After its confluence with the Khandepar river at Bembol (Bicholim) it is called Mandovi till it meets the Arabian Sea ahead of Panaji. Mhadei River is an important tributary of Mandovi holds a great ecological significance for the state. About 85% of the area of Mhadei watershed is forest and is home for Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary.
