Good day

My name is Rochelle Fernandes. I am a PhD student at BITS Pilani, Goa. I am working on servitude in Colonial Goa. Has anyone come across census records of servants during the Portuguese Rule in Goa? I wanted to know if servants were listed and how they were labelled.

All inputs are highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards
Rochelle

Dear Rochelle,

Your project sounds really interesting. While I don't have the exact information you need via census documents, I'm working on servitude and slavery in the early 19th century in Goa, and India more broadly (for a work of historical fiction). If you would like, I am happy to send you the references that I found useful. My email is roa...@unsw.edu.au.

All the best with your project. It's important work that you are doing.

Best wishes,

Roanna

Hello, Rochelle,
I don't know if Patricia Souza de Faria can provide you with some census, but she works about servitude in Colonial Goa, as the article in the attachment.
Probably she has some work in English too.
Best,
Helder Garmes

I think that you know by now that,Konkani was called 'the servants language', for a major part of the colonial period, although there were some missionaries who wrote in this language books for the local population to understand the doctrines of Christianity .
Your work needs to also study the role of the Siddhis of Janjira who still speak the Salcette dialect of the Konkani language today in Karnataka and who have local Christian names like Bostaio,Marie, etc.
and do study the role of the kunbis of Goa.,who were denied admission to the primary schools as their labour was required  to work in the fields and in the property of the bhatcars.(landlords).

Best wishes,
Prof.Sushila Sawant Mendes

Dear Rochelle,

I think the person that has worked more with census is Paulo Teodoro de Matos.

Contact him. I’m sure he can help.
Best wishes for your research

On a musical note, no punn intended, the neo-rich and aristocratic Goans did decide to compose lyrics for mandde and dulpods in Konkani in their efforts to develop this new music form, as a local answer to the Fado from distant Portugal.
Since the former all had their education in Portuguese, they did ask their (home) 'servants' to help them translate Portuguese verses into Konkani... and nevertheless took all the credit for it. Some words could not be translated, so they stayed in original Portuguese...
These 'servants' never got any real recognition for their contribution to the development of this new art form, the mando. (They were not even allowed into these ballroom dances where the high society did dance dressed up in all their posh regalia including evening suits and bassrotop and held at the large ballrooms-cum-living room of some of the majestic houses.)
Some members of the Portuguese society did nickname Konkani with a rude and very derogatory term, which I am not going to mention here, as told to me by elders I spoke to. But that did not deter these 'servants' to speak Konani at home they worked and openly on the streets, despite Portuguese being mandatory.

Do you have any Portaria/ Regulations Published in the Boletim Official do Estado de India which consubstantiate your  sentence: "kunbis of Goa.,who were denied admission to the primary schools as their labour was required  to work in the fields and in the property of the bhatcars.(landlords).  ???   I would like to read.
I also do not see any effort of the present Government in Goa to stimulate Konkani in our Schools.

Dear Prof. Mendes,
Are there any documents (written evidence)(primary sources) indicating that Konkani was called “the servants language” for a major part of the Portuguese rule in Goa and that the Kunbis were denied admission to the primary schools because their labor was required to work in the fields and in the property of the landlords? If so, it would be helpful if you would share that evidence with us.
Thank you.

Dear Rochelle,

Although I cannot comment on census records for Goa, having investigated the registration records of the Portuguese consulate in Zanzibar, the categories are very specific. So I got for instance in 1889, the exact number of cooks, tailors, carpenters, servants, cobblers, coachmen, waiters, and many other categories.

The Bombay census records are all online. You can access these easily. They are very informative about the types of occupations Goans engaged in Bombay, although Goans are at times listed as Goanese and at other times lumped with Native Christians, and/or Portuguese. Here too you will get specifics.

Good luck and let us know how you're getting on.

PS: wanted to add that somewhere in the Goa archives there will be registration of civil cases or files titled 'queixas' which will register complaints, there you will find mostly records of non-payment of wages, beatings, etc. for the working class. (I am extrapolating this from similar files the Portuguese kept for Zanzibar, Nairobi and Mombasa.)

All best,
selma

Dear Rochelle,
While working at the GU from 1988 to 1997 at least five students of Sociology had worked for masters on servitude in Goa, precolonial, colonial-, and post-colonial. They wrote research papers for their MA sem 4. Many of them were MSS, not typed papers. I do not have them. But I would not be able to identify them today not knowing where they are. These papers could have helped you, I suppose. Many could be around in Goa, the time lapse is long.
All the best for your research work.

image/jpegHi Rochelle,
I have just remembered that there exists a publication in Portuguese called 'Goa Setecentista - Tradicao e Moderdinade' by Maria de Jesus dos Martires Lopes.
That book has some amazing statistics of the entire Goa, complete with tables and bar charts for the 1700's period.
I did have quick look (as I have only referred a few bits of it in the past) but have noticed some random statistical references to 'servidores' etc.
I am happy to dig up any useful information from the tables if that period is relevant to you.
Regards,
Joao Paulo Cota

In Canara, esp. in Mangalore too, among the Bamonn Catholics, Konkani was the language of household servants explicitly and they had gone over to English under the newly arrived Jesuits in the late nineteenth century (1878). The Basel Mission from Germany had started mission, printing, industry of tiles etc. in Canara.Catholics had no access. So, they asked for Don Bosco missionaries; Jesuits arrived for English and Latin education. The converted low caste got their workshop and tannery, and a brass band to entertain the rich for their weddings and other festivities. They also got a stage to put up plays. Best musicians grew out of this space. In the church, the lower castes had to stand in in the church behind and by the side of the seated rich until the 1960s. There is a lot here to narrate from field work.

What attracted people to the Basel Mission?
I had two acquaintances working in the skilled trades who were part of the Basel Mission. They seemed to exhibit all the characteristics of the Scheduled Castes including physical appearance. Their names were Manohar Leslie and Wally Kunder. ML could speak German fluently and became a foreman in Siemens India. The only thing that hampered his career in the Training Centre in Saki Naka, Bombay was his red and bloodshot eyes at work every morning. Both these guys were fond of the bottle.

Personally I feel that Goa Setecentista is amongst one of the finest books ever written on Portuguese India.
It is an unusual blend of raw historical data with modern graphics to help visualise the data - perfect balance.
She definitely thinks outside the box!

NB: For those who might not be familiar, the Internet Archives is a global repository of old, useful literary works that includes Portuguese India books, many of which are not available in hard copy anywhere.
Very easy to open an account with them.

I don't think Maria de Jesus has any relationship with Lopes Mendes! She is the daughter of Antonio Martires Lopes and Palmira (I may be wrong) Lopes. Martires Lopes has some publications to his credit and was the director of tourism in Goa until he left Goa.
He was also responsible in organising the collection of the then Biblioteca Nacional of which he was the Conservador with an excellent card catalogue which we still use.
She is married to Artur Teodoro de Matos.
Her book Goa Setecentista is translated into english, published by Manohar, New Delhi and is available in the Central Library in Panjim.
