A friend wrote back to me off-list: "OMG! Didn't know Goa had become such a conference hub. It was not like that in the years I visited.... It surely makes up for lost foreign tourists, while visitors are probably in the demographics eyed by the government..."

When initially posted, I did comment: "There seems to be a lot getting announced for Goa this month. Are these legit events?" Am still not sure if these are genuine events. Some seem to be announcing tiny hotels as their venues (couldn't go through the entire list). If anyone has pointers on this, kindly share... Either way, it's a story :-)

Dear Rico,
If I was to take a call, I would not bat for any of these conferences. It looks like a 'system generated' call with prefixing 'International' and adding anything else that would be high sounding. We get plenty of such kinds in our mail boxes and ignore. Though many in other parts of India might still register for hefty fees, some of them might even come to Goa and might go back with a system generated certificate for a presentation that may or may not have been done .Would help them for their career advancement.
Don't even bother to do a story!, unless others have another view.
Rahul

Exactly my fears! If so many academic conferences are really happening in Goa, it would be no mean achievement! We would all be proud about that. On the other hand, if it's a scam or a sham, it should make news too :-) FN

Fred,
I have checked that website www.10times.com
It is based in India and anybody can just link a social media account or create an account with them, with zero checks, and create an event.
Just ridiculous, no checks of any type are done. So it appears to be some fake entries in there.
The Covid conference shows as 500 people expected to attend 'from previous years estimates'.
Did you guys ever had a similar covid-19 event in Goa before with 500 delegates from all over the world attending? Is there any venue for this kind of figure in Goa?
So, to test it, I have created an event for the 25th November called the 'International conference of the spoon licking society', where I assume more than 1500 members worldwide are expected to attend, where they will need to bring their own favourite spoon to lick.
It will be a blast! 🙂
Because that website has high paid Google search index, it will appear right on top of any related search.
Fake data generated on such spurious events will inflate hotel booking prices, flight prices, etc. which is bad, as one is creating an artificial 'demand' for Goa tourism. Hence, anybody who genuinely wants to go to Goa at those times, they will face higher rates on everything they try to book.
I am not sure who is behind this scam, but no prizes to guess which industries will benefit from this.
Will check if anybody will contact me or if the designated venue might tell me off.
Tried to do the venue at your house, but they only accept their pre-defined establishments.
Will delete it shortly.
Thanks,
JP

Just like predatory journals there are a lot predatory conferences announced on the web these days. They are scams to steal your money and never actually happen. Please beware.

Great work, Joao!

I agree with Rahul about these proliferating international conferences. The official academic world keeps raising qualifications -- degrees, papers published, conferences attended, etc -- for everything, which looks very quality-conscious, but without addressing the many shortfalls and general rottenness of the system. The result, like everywhere else, is all kinds of open fraud and fakery to make the grade, for hefty payment, of course.

But why so many in Goa?
Are we seriously underrating the "tourism potential" of Goa?
Or the fact that anyone loves any excuse to visit this place?
Specially at year-end....

The academic world has locked itself in a vortex of ever more complex prodedures and requirements which has taken out every pleasure there was in doing reserach. A friend of mine used to refer to our university as a KFZ, a Knowledge Free Zone. Another academic called the education part of it "very extensive primary education". Being terminated from the university was for me a blessing in disguise. The stories I hear from ex-colleagues are getting every year more surrealistic/nightmarish.  Cheers to all, p+7D!&H!

On the topic, I thought I would go all the way to investigate one such event: the covid-19 event that is supposedly taking place in Panjim on one page of that conferences website, and then at The Flora Grand Hotel at Vasco da Gama. It is mentioned that it is expected to be attended by 100-500 people and that there will be... 200 speakers! On the list of speakers, there are about 2 dozen names, most non-medical related, and all these names are repeated so that one gets about 200 names! 🙂
I have messaged these organizers stating that I would be interested in exhibiting. No reply.
Then I have requested details, and received an automated message with a link to a page.
I have clicked on the link and got the details of the venue: The Flora Frand Hotel at Vasco da Gama. Called them up and after a few missed calls, the lady receptionist confirmed they have no such bookings!
Before that, I had check the website on the WhoIs.com to find out who owns the 10times.com website. The contact is registered to a UK address, not too far from where I live, but then it is a PO box! The UK phone number is for GoDaddy hosting provider as the site is hosted by GoDaddy internet hosting site, which is Indian but again over hosted by Amazon, in the USA.
Called that number (GoDaddy) and was told that they have nothing to do with the website but gave me the number for complaining to Amazon - which I might do tomorrow.
Hence, by the looks of it, all these 'conferences' in Goa seem to be all fake.
The motive can be as simple as to create a false sense that Goa is super busy and that attracts internet traffic to the state, as well as inflate travel/accommodation costs.
I am not sure if hotels are involved in this scam, in collusion or unwittingly, as they themselves benefit from a higher rate booking - as these bookings rates can be manipulated by online travel agents who get a commission on bookings - so higher booking prices, better commissions - and the hotels won't complain if they get a higher booking fee!
This is plain wrong for the genuine tourist and for the touristic reputation of Goa already battered with so many scandals and scams.
Will try to get all these fake conferences cancelled, this is not good for Goa's image for obvious reasons.
Good day,
Joao Paulo Cota

Adriano Afonso PhD, originally from Betalbatim graduated from U. of Wisconsin.
At Schering-Plough Research Institute, N.J., he was credited with pioneering work that
led to the discovery of cholesterol lowering drugs.
I am  in the process of collecting information on prominent scientists of Goan origin.

Any further information about the family you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Betalbatim is a rather small village just off Majorda-Nuvem road, Nuvem being my village. It has some links to the migration in East Africa, which spread from Velsao to Betalbatim via marriage. But that small conurbation of villages Betalbatim-Nuvem-Majorda is better known for its sea-faring links, most of the young men here work onboard cruise ships, which has heralded a rise in living standards without any real social mobility. Formerly this was the bakers belt and then the sons took to the seas, occupations tend to be inherited, university graduation low, population density up until, recent times low. All this is changing as the area increasingly becomes a suburb of Margoa, with the inevitable concretisation.

Wishing you success with your book.

Aleixo Costa's work is now in four volumes. The fourth (a post-1961 update) was published by Broadway, Panjim. The other three came out from Macau, for which reason can be hard to access, except in libraries. Useful work, interesting, comprehensive and well printed.
Lots of links to Betalbatim here: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q=betalbatim ... but I do not think this village has a book on it (as yet). FN

Interestingly, Betalbatim has the oldest records of births, deaths and baptisms at the Archives Department in Panjim.
I did access a lot of information whilst researching my family tree history, as my father's side is from Cotawaddo, Betalbatim and the oldest book, just repaired, dates back to 1750's soon after the inquisition period.
However, it is hardly readable... but managed to reach 1790's on our family tree.
I have found very interesting entries of all sorts, some shocking, others hilarious - great reading, better than Netflix! Betalbatim seemed to be a cool place to live at the time!🙂
Whilst on the task, I did interview some of my distant relatives just by knocking on random doors as nearly everybody there is a Cota or Cotta... and found anecdotes dating back my late grandfather's youth days, the late Maestro Jose Santana Cota, way back in 1920's... before he migrated to Bombay to join the musical scene of Bollywood film industry and then back to Goa.
Good luck if you are going to produce a book on the Betalbatim village, I would definitely be interested in buying a signed copy!
