Sanjay Subrahmanyam is one of the leading authorities in the study of the Portuguese colony in India.
In Portugal, there are at least two of his publications have been translated in portuguese:

Improvising Empire (Portuguese Trade and Settlement in the Bay of Bengal, 1500 - 1700) and The Career and Legend of Vasco da Gama.

His book on Vasco was only published in Portugal in 2024, after two decades of being blocked by the most conservative forces.

According to the Lisbon newspaper Expresso, Sanjay is fluent in several languages (Tamil, Hindi, English, French, Urdu, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Persian, Danish, Dutch).
