The book Govyatil Parashuram Katha va Brahmani Itihaslekhan (The Parashuram Legend in Goa and Brahminical Historiography) by Shailendra Mehta will be launched on Saturday, July 25, at 4:00 PM at the Conference Hall of the Institute Menezes Braganza, under the joint auspices of Sanjana Prakashan and the Institute Menezes Braganza. Kishore Naik Gaonkar, the head of 'Gavkari Media', will preside over the ceremony, while Rajaram Patil—a leader of the 'Bhumiputra' movement in Maharashtra—will attend as the chief guest. Prof. Kuldeep Kamat will anchor the event.
The book offers a critical analysis of one of the most enduring legends regarding Goa's origins and examines its place within historical consciousness. Written for scholars, students, researchers, social activists, and general readers interested in Goan history, South Asian historiography, caste studies, and cultural politics, the book aims to foster an informed discussion on the complex interplay between mythology, history and identity. Rather than trivializing faith or religious belief, the book clarifies the distinction between 'mythology'—as a source of cultural meaning—and 'history'—as a discipline grounded in critical inquiry and evidence. It encourages readers to reflect on how myths come to be accepted as historical truth and how such processes influence collective memory and public discourse.
The chief guest, Rajaram Patil—a teacher, farmer, and fisherman by profession has successfully led a struggle alongside the farmers of Raigad against the SEZ project in Navi Mumbai. He is the founder of the 'Shetkari Prabodhini'. He has played a pivotal role in numerous public movements, including the struggle for the rights of dispossessed tenant farmers in Konkan; protests against polluting coal projects; the fight against CIDCO in the Revdanda-Murud-Raigad region; the campaign for the housing and gaothan (village settlement) rights of the Agri, Koli, Karadi, Bhandari, Dhangar, Vadar Adivasi, and East Indian communities in Mumbai; the movement to protect OBC reservation;. He was also instrumental in the movement to name the Navi Mumbai International Airport after the popular leader D.B. Patil. He consistently writes and offers constitutional commentary on issues such as reservation, social inequality, and Manuvad, while championing the ideologies of the Buddha, Emperor Ashoka, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Phule, Shahu, and Dr. Ambedkar.
