Notes on Sources Guts, Glory and Empire

Dear fellow researchers,

Recently, quite spontaneously, the Dutch Anthropologist and Research Fellow, platformed my book Guts, Glory and Empire as a "brilliantly researched and composed history of Goans in Zanzibar."

I had meant the following essay to be part of the book but the book ran so long, I had to cut 30,000 words off it. My publisher and I then decided, the essay will appear on my journal for those interested in the source material. I had put this essay up here briefly but I am putting it up once again. In it, I also mention sources which I could not due to various restraints investigate such as the archives of the Holy Ghost French missionaries, the German consulate in Zanzibar, and the earliest American merchant community in Germany, all of whom had interactions with Goans and would have left an archived trace of these interactions somewhere.

Finally, for those interested in Indian Ocean histories, I have noted the work of Norman Bennett, M. Reda Bhacker and William C. Bissell as being most formative in my understand of the region. Elsewhere, in interviews, I have noted the work of Teresa Albuquerque as having left a trail for researchers to follow as far as East Africa goes.

 A search into the Mamai Kamat archives, now shifted to XCHR, if I am not mistaken, has a lot on these issues which I went through when I was residing  at the Jesuit House, Panaji, working at GU. After shifting them I had no access but a good study would show how they were present from 1510, when AdeA arrived there. As far as I could see it was their original home under Bijapur too and further research would show how they functioned as traders under Bijapur and, later, under Velha Conquistas.
