2025 has been marked by multiple commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the independence of African countries that were previously subject to Portuguese colonialism. Sandra Ataíde Lobo, a researcher at CHAM-Centre for Humanities, reflects on the role played by the press, journalists, and intellectuals in the construction of national identities and in the independence processes of these nations. Addressing a period violently marked by the censorship system and other forms of institutional and personal repression, Sandra Ataíde Lobo recalls that, in these societies, writing frequently interacted with orality, and also asserted itself as a way of elaborating and disseminating subversive and revolutionary ideas. The interview is conducted by Isabel Araújo Branco. Sandra Ataíde Lobo is a researcher at CHAM - Centre for Humanities and one of the coordinators of the International Group for the Study of the Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire. A PhD in History and Theory of Ideas, she developed the project "The Home and the World: the Goan intellectual elite and the colonial periodical press" between 2019 and 2024. She is the senior editor of the journal Práticas da História. Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past. Her research focuses particularly on Goan intellectual elites and their contribution to the construction of Goan cultural and political modernity, framed by the Portuguese and British empires, and by international and Indian anti-colonial movements. She has been interested in exploring the concept of the colonial press in its theoretical dimension and is beginning to expand the scope of her study to the African press. Sandra Ataíde Lobo, investigadora do CHAM-Centro de Humanidades, reflecte sobre o papel desempenhada pela imprensa, pelos jornalistas e por intelectuais nas construções de identidades nacionais e nos processos de independência destas nações. Abordando um período violentamente marcado pelo sistema de censura e outras formas de repressão institucional e pessoal, Sandra Ataíde Lobo recorda que, nestas sociedades, a escrita dialogava frequentemente com a oralidade, e também se afirmava como forma de elaborar e divulgar ideias subversivas e revolucionárias. A entrevista é conduzida por Isabel Araújo Branco.

 

Sandra Ataíde Lobo é investigadora do CHAM - Centro de Humanidades e uma das coordenadoras do Grupo Internacional de Estudos da Imprensa Periódica Colonial do Império Português. Doutorada em História e Teoria das Ideias, desenvolveu entre 2019 e 2024 o projecto «The Home and the World: the Goan intellectual elite and the colonial periodical press». É editora principal da revista Práticas da História. Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past. Investiga, em particular, as elites intelectuais goesas e o seu contributo para a construção da modernidade cultural e política goesa, enquadrada pelos impérios português e britânico, e por movimentos anticoloniais internacionais e indiano. Tem-se interessado em explorar o conceito de imprensa colonial na sua dimensão teorizadora e começa a alargar o âmbito do seu estudo à imprensa africana.
