Excellent and very detailed article.
You must have done a ton of homework.

Roland.

Thanks for highlighting this issue with data-driven analysis, Pamela. It has always been my grouse about life in Goa and sadly, it's much worse than I feared.

When I looked at the figures more than a decade ago, Goa had the highest per capita road-side fatality rate in the country, and India had one of the highest in the world.

Thank you Roland and Anibel for the feedback.  Yes, it involved a considerable amount of work, but felt it was necessary, since the narrative that was getting play in the local media and action (in terms of fines) was focussing  blame on the vulnerable.

Truth is, middle class Goa, is quite literally being thrown under the bus and being blamed and penalised for it as well. While they intuitively know they are being conned, they sometimes lack the intellectual arguments/data/analysis to advocate their case.

Since this dovetails with the form of journalism I enjoy, I need to find ways to sustain this.....

Anibel, did not get down to comparing the per capita rates, but suspect the trend might be the same, sadly. In ranking, Goa figures like 21-24, due to its smaller size than other Indian states. There's a lot more data, which I should put in a separate article. Statistics aside, the human element is simply so tragic.
