Veteran journalist Derek Almeida to feature in GUJ’s ‘Behind The Byline’ series
Veteran journalist Derek Almeida will be celebrated in ‘Behind The Byline’, know your GUJ member series, on Friday, June 5.
Almeida will be in conversation with Nida Sayed, Principal Correspondent, The Times of India at GUJ hall, Shram Shakti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, 4pm.
Born in Tanzania, Africa, Almeida completed his school education at St. Paul's High School, Belgaum, and later did his BSc in physics, maths and chemistry from Raja Lakhmagauda Science Institute, Belgaum.
Almeida began his journalism career with OHeraldo in 1985 and devoted over three decades to the profession, before retiring in 2017 as editor of The Goan Everyday.
Over the course of his rich and distinguished career, Almeida held several prominent newsroom roles in Goa’s media landscape. He served as an executive editor of Gomantak Times and The Navhind Times, and spent two years as Editor of Goa 365. He also worked for Newslink, an English-language daily launched by the Tarun Bharat group in Belagavi (Belgaum).
Inspired by Behram Contractor and his celebrated “Busybee” column, Almeida developed his own humour column, In Black and White, during his time at Newslink. After returning to OHeraldo, he revived the column, which was later renamed Footloose during his tenure at The Navhind Times. The column continued under that title through his subsequent roles at Gomantak Times and The Goan Everyday.
Following his retirement from full-time journalism, Almeida turned to fiction writing. He recently launched his debut graphic novel, Guru, Girls and a Dude without a Plan. He is currently working on his second book, a crime mystery novel.
‘Behind The Byline’, know your GUJ member is a monthly series initiated by the Goa Union of Journalists, where a senior GUJ member of repute is introduced to its members and the general public.
