QUICKIE REVIEW: Starfish Pickle (Bina Nayak)

Bina Nayak could have bought herself a pair of rollerblades and gone rollerblading at Dona Paula.  Or, got a Bull’s Eye tattooed on her forehead.  Instead, she chose to write a book and call it Starfish Pickle.

If you’ve lived in Goa in the 1990"s, listened to Eight Finger Eddie shooting the breeze and stories from under The Banyan Tree (there are many banyan trees all over Goa but for those in the know, they know which one I mean) for a hundred rupees a story; if you’ve slugged back beers with Antonio Caroli better known as Jungle and the man behind the Shiva’s Face sculpture at Vagator, Goa; if you’ve rolled home (with the milkman as the saying goes except that there are no milkmen in Porvorim) at five in the morning, wondering why there are fireworks in the skies and why your mouth is full of wood shavings, you will feel completely at home in Tara"s world in Starfish Pickle.

It's not a book for the faint-hearted or the weak-kneed.

It's not a book that could be your story.  But, as one of the racy, juicy, splendidly drawn characters in the book says, "Don’t open the jar!  The pickle will spoil!"

Tead the book. Savour the stories.
