A dictionary.... in Konkani

At the price of Rs 195, this was quite an attractive price. I picked
up a copy from the Other India Book Store, but it seems to be out of
stock there currently.

Turns out that this is an AES [1][2] reprint of a 1930 Konkani
dictionary, which the Wikipedia suggests was written by Dacho Furtado
[3]

Given that this is most probably a copyright-expired work (don't know
when the author died, and currently India copyright laws say 60 years
after the author's death, the work goes into the public domain), I
thought of circulating some words from the book.

The response was, typically Goan, and quite often angry. Someone asked
me why I was spreading incorrect Konkani. When told that it came from
a dictionary, they said that the 1930s Konkani had no relevance to
modern times, and the language had changed significantly. Guess that
is right. But I decided to keep putting out these words, just to
encourage someone else to (i) either update this dictionary or (ii)
create another easy-to-use Romi Konkani dictionary for our times :-)

Check out the text. I think it comes in both AES and Broadway editions
(though a little hard to find currently). Below is a specimen of the
online posts I've carved out of it (just copy and paste, of course).

Many of these words you have pointed out can be heard in sermons during mass, here in Salcete. What I mean to say is that maybe the language is still alive, if only in limited circles?

Hi Leonard, the problem is about the spelling, since new forms of
spellings have been adopted post-1961, to reflect the reduced
influence of Portuguese (and perhaps increased influence of English
and other regional languages) on Konkani. For instance, instead of the
'c', the 'k' is used much more in Romi Konkani.

Eka kallacho instead of ECA CALLACHO (contemporary), I guess.

My old friend Dr W R Da Silva (himself a priest) used to describe the
church-spoken dialect of Konkani as "padri bhas". It is perhaps a
quaint mix of Luso influences, a lot of Sanskritisms (convenient to
explain theological constructs, I guess) and the like.

Of course, I'm no specialist in this field. But the idea of copyright-
free writing, which can be reused and rebuilt, is one which interests
me a lot. FN

In short, in the modern way of spelling, C is replaced by K to make the 'K' sound.

Thanks, Rico, for inviting me to this group. And hello, everybody!

 

Like any other Goan, I love Goa and I love Konkani.

And I collect books on Goa and on Konkani (as far as my modest purse allows me). 

 

My purpose in coming here today is to ask if anyone of our group members knows what happened to the Konkani Encyclopedic Dictionary (or something like it) that Professor Kashinath Mahale had put his hands to, a few years before he died. He had told me he was working on his first volume.

 

Has at least the first volume seen the light of day? I would be grateful to know.

Dear Armando, Enclosed are a couple of files from the Thomas Stevens
Konknni Kendr, which I received via Miguel Braganza. He said I could
share it online, but please ask permission before uploading it.

What we could also do is to support institutions like this, doing
useful work on the language front, by buying their publications or
