I was in touch (just for a mail or two) with Manuel Seabra [seabra at telefonica.net] and Vimala Devi in 2008 via  seabra at telefonica.net

Not sure if the address stays the same. Hope this helps. FN

Can someone explain this part to me?

"It was also at this time that the writer chose her pseudonym, a name that brought together in one persona the divided Hindu and Catholic communities of Goa."

Her name was Teresa da Piedade de Baptista Almeida.
She changed it to Vimala Devi.

Which part of "Vimala Devi" is Catholic?

Cheers!

Cecil

I suggest that you contact  Dr Paul Melo e Castro.

If you don't have it FN will surely inform him and Paul will most probably reply on or after Monday as I am aware that Dr Melo e Castro does not answer mail on his sacred weekends.

What happens after this I don't know because from the little I know Vimala-bai is not fond of fortune hunters.

Not knowing the motive for your query please forgive me if my response appears vague.

There is an interesting en-face translation of Os Filhos de Job or Job's Children at the link below. This story will be part of Paul Melo e Castro's forthcoming 'Lengthening Shadows' from Goa1556.

Dear Epifanio,

Interesting you're from Penha-de-França

In a previous Wikipedia version of the Vimala Devi article (it has since been modified slightly) the following matter was given:

Vimala Devi was born in 1932 in the village of Britona in the parish of Penha de França, across the Mandovi river from Panjim, the principal town of Goa. At that time Britona was owned by Devi's family, which belonged to the uppermost brahmin caste of bhatkar landowners

I can't believe that the whole village of Britona was owned by Devi's family although they might have owned large tracts of land there. Can you as a Penha-de-França-kar confirm or contradict what I'm saying here?
Thanks
Augusto

Dear Augusto Sir,

Considering the statement 'the whole village of Britona was owned by Devi's family', I inquired with few Old people from that time. As per them this statement is incorrect. Since 16th Century The Majority of the land of Penha-de-Franca (Britona) belonged to The Church of Our Lady of Penha-de-Franca, which was donated by the Church Founder Donna Ana Azavedo (Franciscan Friar and Widow of a Portuguese Nobel man, Christovam DSouza).

In Recent years the land is encroached / Sold  etc. by many migrants and villagers. Majority of the Church property itself is encroached or under dispute.

About Vimla Devi, I had never heard before apart reading about her on Wiki. Nor any elderly villagers have knowledge about her. This is the reason I wanted to be in touch with her. Anyways, let me inquire with few more elderly villagers.

The only person who can give a detail history about my village is Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas. He started his writing when he was Parish Priest of Penha-de-Franca and was very much involved in collecting historical facts related to the village.

The nature with which the Village is blessed has always encouraged many to uncover their writing creativity. We accept this as blessings of Our Lady of Penha de Franca.

Epifanio

Dear Epifanio,

Thank you for your interesting post.

From my info, Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas is a storehouse of information.

good wishes

It is very, very unlikely that 'the whole village of Britona was owned by Devi's family', If it was so, I would have heard of it by now as her brother Carlos Almeida is married to my wife's late aunt Dr Rene de Noronha. Carlos who resides in Portugal, has now also taken up to writing non-fiction.

It's sounds correct now. But I really wish to meet her sometime in life.

Maybe our Owner could suggest how to offer citations. I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Dear Epifanio,
Thanks for your confirmation.

BTW were you my student by any chance? If not and even if you were, please stop addressing me - Augusto Sir - unless you would like me to call you Happy Fanio and other much viler things! Arre baba, I am just your simple, common, garden-variety, eklo, eksuro, apurbaiecho Augusto! Not even a grand old ek, don, tin, khapri Augustin!

Anyway, I do hope you make it to Spain and when you're there you have the opportunity to visit Vimala Devi and get her darshan. If you do don't forget to give us a report.

BTW does the Baptista Almeida house still stand in Britona? Where is it? Is there anyone living in it or has it become ruins like many another Bhatkar's Vhodlem Ghor?

Best wishes.

Dear Augusto,

Hahaha....nice one..

Actually, I like writing and have written poems and a novel published through DKA.

Below link is review of my novel :

http://daleluismenezes.blogspot.in/2012/12/mind-and-heart-over-matter.html?m%3D1&ei=qzcTc7PC&lc=en-IN&s=1&m=426&ts=1441021968&sig=APONPFnnUXJUqjdHnhrrYkw-F7w_qsfC3Q

That's the reason found very interest in topic of a renowned writer from my village.

Obviously, in next few years am planning a tour in Europe ( all credit to Purtugez Passport), hence collecting contacts.

About Baptista  Almeida and their property, I have to inquire with some old knowledgeable villagers. I'll keep u updated as soon as I get any information.

Dear Epifanio (cc Augusto and Frederick),

Yes, I can confirm that the e-mail Frederick sent round is Manuel's and that Vimala checks it. I can't guarantee that she will reply though...

It's very odd that the wikipedia page says that the whole of Britona was owned by Devi's family. I wrote the Wikipedia page as a piece of basic bibliography for a course I teach (where we read her 'Monção') and I certainly didn't write that... But anyway. I just looked and Augusto has fixed things.

All best,
Paul
