Book on Tomazinho Cardozo’s tiatrs released in Candolim. Event marks 80th birthday of veteran tiatrist and cultural icon.
Photo: DKA MediaThe book “Mirror: Social Realities in the Selected Tiatrs of Tomazinho Cardozo” was released on April 14, 2026, at Sala da Nossa Senhora da Piedade, Dandi, Candolim, coinciding with the 80th birthday of noted tiatrist Tomazinho Cardozo. The event was organised to recognise his contribution to tiatr and Goan cultural heritage.
The publication is based on a Ph.D. thesis by Dr. Fr. Luis Xavier Gomes and has been brought out in Devanagari Konkani and Romi Konkani, along with an English translation by Irene P. Cardozo. The book examines social realities depicted in selected tiatrs of Tomazinho Cardozo, covering political, social, cultural, religious, and economic aspects of Goan society.
The programme began with a welcome address by Irene Cardozo, who outlined the effort involved in making the research accessible to a wider audience. Around 300 people attended the function, including tiatr artistes, scholars, students, and well-wishers.
The book was released by Chief Guest Digambar Kamat, Minister for Public Works Department and former Chief Minister of Goa. In his address, he appreciated the academic work and acknowledged Tomazinho Cardozo’s long-standing contribution to tiatr.
Fr. Myron Barreto, Manager of New Age Printers and publisher of the book, was present at the event. Dr. Fr. Luis Xavier Gomes spoke on the significance of the work, highlighting the importance of documenting tiatr as a literary and cultural form.
The programme also included the felicitation of Tomazinho Cardozo on his 80th birthday, recognising his role as a playwright and cultural figure. He later delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to those present.
The event concluded with a tribute to his work in tiatr and literature.
