Road at Sirlim named after Fr. Antonio Pereira, SJ and Reprint of his Book ‘Konknni Oparinchem Bhanddar’ released on his Birth Centenary 

 

Margao: An event was held on August 25, 2019 at Sirlim to celebrate the birth centenary of the famed Konkani writer and researcher, Fr. Antonio Pereira. Goa’s Minister for Water Resources and Fisheries was the Chief Guest at the occasion. Sirlim Dramapur Sarpanch Sanjana Chari, Zilla Panchayat Member, Cipru Cardozo, President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) Tomazinho Cardozo, Vice President Fr. Conceicao D’Silva, Secretary Vincy Quadros, Treasurer Celso Fernandes Parish Priest of Our Lady of Hope, Chinchinim Fr. Jose Antonio Costa, Chaplain of Our Lady of Merces, Sirlim Fr. Menino Valles, Secretary  of Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa Memorial Trust, Fausto V. Da Costa, Treasurer Fabian Da Costa, President of Followers of Felicio Cardoso, Anthony Menezes, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa Gurudas Pilernkar, Member Secretary Cezar D’Mello, Editor of Vauraddeancho Ixtt weekly, Bro. Eusebio Miranda, and several Konkani writers and priests were present for the function.

 

The programme was divided into two sections. First, the evening began with the naming of the road and was then followed by the main celebration of the birth centenary. Walter Menezes enlightened the invitees on the event naming the road running from the main highway to Sirlim village as “Fr. Antonio Pereira S.J. Road”. Fr. Menino Vales’ then prayed and spoke on Fr. Antonio Pereira and blessed the plaque.  The unveiling of the curtain was done at the hands of the Minister, Filipe Neri Rodrigues in the presence over 200 people. 

 

Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) arranged the main celebration which included the reprint and release of Fr. Antonio Pereira’s twentieth book ‘Konknni Oparinchem Bhanddar’ at the Sirlim chapel hall. DKA reprinted the book under its ‘Adlem Girest Sahi’tya’ scheme.which in 1985 was published by Gulab Printers The book consists of several proverbs and its elucidation by the writer has been very beneficial to the Konkani writers. 

 

In his address the Chief Guest, Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues said that it is not enough to name the road after the great son of Sirlim but insisted that it ought to be used and called upon the people to include the name in their addresses. DKA President, Tomazinho Cardozo in his presidential address reminded people of the greatness of Fr. Antonio Pereira and requested the villagers to abundantly utilise the name given to the road. Fr. Jose Antonio Costa and Sanjana Chari also spoke on the occasion. The grandniece of Fr. Antonio Pereira, Anushka Rodrigues thanked the organisers on behalf of the family members.

 

To commemorate the function, DKA Vice President Fr. Conceicao D’Silva welcomed the gathering. Secretary, Vincy Quadros gave the insight of the event and compered the function and finally the Treasurer, Celso Fernandes proposed vote of thanks. The function ended with the singing of the national anthem.
