Rummaging through my files, I found a sheaf of papers, Goa -- Cradle of my Dreams, written by Nora Secco da Souza. That name rings a bell. Thinks she was a journalist. Maybe oldtimers on this list can give a little info on her, and if the book is still available.

Nora Seco de Souza, from Velsao, was a freelance writer and contributed much to 'The Navhind Times' and 'Goa Today'. She is no more. Son is Garth de Souza who runs a hotel in Dona Paula.

Thanks Valmiki, and I this this book is a collection of her artiles in both Navhind and Goa Today. I doubt if the book is available. Another sheaf of printed pages I found in my collection was Goan Voices, No. 2, by Susan Rodrigues, and the book or e-book was published in England. I believe Susan is daughter of Ferdinand Rodrigues, well-known among the UK Goans, and who brother, Armando Rodrigues, lives in Toronto. The pages carry reminiscences of East African Goans who have settled in England or Canada. I didn't see the first volume. Maybe some listers have seen the first. I suppose it has stopped publishing. Now comes The Global Goan, and I am not sure if its going to be the Voice of Diaspora Goans in particular.

Now that Goa Today has stopped publication after more than 50 years, it was much of the reading habit of someone like me from young days. Ultimately, I was a contributor and mostly recently wrote a review of the book on Pio Gama-Pinto. Sad that mine-owners Salgoakars could not maintain, though it's sure mining has suffered in Goa not just because of Covid but strict opposition from activist groups, such as Goa Foundation.

i wish if the Institute Menezes Braganza takes over Goa Today and merges with its own bulletin to produce a magazine that would be a mixture of its usual features and stories such as the one Goa Today carried. Not sure if other magazines or journal have survived the economic downturn of Covid. The Goan mediascape seems to be seriously affected by the deadly impact of Covid. Lack of intellectual diet that magazines and journal provide would hit hard the Intellectual field of Goa, and perhaps to could be rendered barren in the long run.

Time to save such effects would taking place.

Dear Eugene

I take it you are referring to Shiraz Durrani's book on Pio Pinto. I would love to see your review.

I recently received a request from AwaaZ magazine in Kenya for whatever I could find relating to the East African Indian National Congress among my father's papers. As you can imagine, there was an abundance, mostly reflected in his book Brown Man, Black Country. While searching, I came across some interesting material relating to Pio. I thought I could write an article in this regard -- and might even do so!

My father raised the toast at Pio's wedding, full of good wishes and extravagant expectations, and they appear to have had quite a warm relationship.

Hi,

I am sorry that I don't have a PDF of the review, as the Editor informed me that it's carried in its last and final issue. It's unfortunate that Goa Today, which sustained Goan reading habit for over 50 years, had to down its shutters due to Covid downturn. I asked some people in Goa but nobody has replied. I will ask Augusto Pinto if he has Goa Today and, if so, can he please shot a photo and send it to me.

I did read your father's book, and I am aware he raised the toast for Pio's wedding. Pio's eldest daughter is in touch with me, and, I think, that your dad led her down the aisle for her wedding. Linda lives in Ottawa, and she informed me that Tereskha lives in Toronto, the same place they lived when they came to Canada.

I know Pio's sister, Sevigne, very well, and i was on the committee of the former Portuguese Institute, of which Sevigne was president. She know resides in Goa, at Taleigao, and I am Facebook friends with her daughters, Leila, who is in Goa, and Lalita, the eldest, who is in Florida.

Was Pio not part or one of the founders of the Patrick Lumamba Institute in Kenya? Just for information, as I read long time ago that he was key player there.

I doubt the book would be available, Eugene. It's quite an old print.

Don't know much about Goan Voices, but it is sad that Lambert's baby has been given a requiem.

Valmiki, it's unfortunate that Goa cannot sustain a monthly. I know that newspapers died after just a short existence. Gomantak being the latest victim. The mediascape is narrowing drastically, and that's a worrying sign. I am more worried that youngsters will be devoid of good reading material. As I learn, Govapuri, from Menezes Braganza Institute, lacks the reach. Having seen and read many issues, under Manohar Shetty and Arun Sinha, I was impressed by the journal. I have no idea why it wasn't as popular as Goa Today. As for The Goan Review, I am sad to say that it's was or still is a "poor cousin" to GT. I have written for The Goan Review, but I have no idea what are its circulation figures. Seems Gulab fares much better, and read by more Konkani-reading people. Just are just random views. You are in a better position to provide analysis of the current status of the media in Goa.

Eugene, I won't go into the analysis. Only facts, as they obtain here. Gomantak (I mean the Marathi dainik) continues to thrive. If you meant Gomantak Times (sister daily in the English language), I am told it is being revived. They are looking out for a suitable editor.

Jeanne, I am sorry that I didn't see your post till today. The review came in the last issue of Goa Today before the magazine was shut down.  I had asked the Editor, Vinayak, to send me the pdf. However, he said he can only do so when the office reopens. If anyone says the mag, please photocopy or shot with a smartphone and send it to me and Jeanne. I want to send a copy of the scan to Linda, Pio's daughter in Ottawa.
