Retired Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Dr. Ferdino I. Rebello, formally released his landmark book Our Rights at a distinguished gathering held on Monday at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The book was launched by Chief Justice of India Justice B. R. Gavai and Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath, in the presence of several sitting and former judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, along with prominent jurists, scholars, and public figures.
Our Rights offers an in-depth examination of crucial constitutional and legal questions, with particular focus on issues affecting India’s most marginalized communities. One of the book’s key chapters analyses the plight of Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims who remain excluded from Scheduled Caste benefits under Article 341(iii) of the Constitution. Through rigorous research and thoughtful commentary, Justice Rebello addresses the constitutional and social challenges posed by this exclusion and calls for renewed attention to the principles of equality, justice, and human dignity.
Speaking at the event, Chief Justice Gavai, who had earlier served alongside Justice Rebello at the Bombay High Court praised his former colleague’s unwavering commitment to constitutional values, judicial integrity, and his steadfast dedication to ensuring justice for the marginalized. His remarks underscored the high regard in which Justice Rebello is held within the legal fraternity.
Members of the Rebello family also expressed pride on the occasion, stating that the publication of Our Rights brings honour not only to Justice Rebello’s parents but to all who admire his work and contributions.
Justice Rebello’s legal career spans more than four decades, during which he served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Judge of the Bombay High Court, Senior Advocate, and later as an arbitrator and legal consultant. Beyond his judicial responsibilities, he has been closely associated with various social and cultural initiatives, including the welfare of fishermen and toddy tappers, and the promotion of Konkani language and Goan heritage.
The release of Our Rights marks another milestone in Justice Rebello’s longstanding efforts to advance social justice and constitutional understanding, earning him widespread respect across legal and public spheres.
