Symposium on the LIfe and Works of Dr Manohar Rai Sardessai

The Shenoi Goembab School of Languages and Literature  is organising the commemoration of the Birth Centennial Year of Dr. Manohar Rai Sardessai, First Head of Department of French of Goa University,  scheduled for 13 & 14 March 2024, at the Conference Hall, Administration Building, Goa University.

Dr. Sardessai's poetic genius transcended boundaries, as evident in his works in Konkani, English, French, Portuguese, and Marathi. In recognition of his profound impact, the Shenoi Goembab School of Languages and Literature, Goa University is organizing a Two-Day National Symposium dedicated to exploring the Life and Works of Dr. Manohar Rai Sardessai.

The inauguration of the two-day symposium is scheduled for 10 am, with Vice Chancellor Prof Harilal B Menon to Chair.

Dr Edith Noronha Melo Furtado: Manoharrai Sardessai -- at the confluence of the East and West (in English-French)

"The works of Dr Manoharrai Sardessai are mostly written in Konkani. However, his studies and experiences in France, his love of French literature, and familiarity with the language engaged his imagination in themes often inspired by French Romanticism. A strong political consciousness and a sense of mission drew him to the political reality of colonised Goa. His French poems during his years in France, expressing longing for his homeland, are marked with exilic nostalgia."

"Dr Manohar Rai Sardessai's poetry presents different challenges for different languages while recreating a poem that essentially emanates from oral language, to be read and listened to. Our own experience in creating the French version of the Konkani ballad 'Bebeanchem Cazar' with its diversity of sounds and images defines a process of conformity, consensus and contradiction."
