Dear Steve
Thank you for this review. Are you indeed an East African Asian (like me)?
I have read your stories in the Joao Roque Literary Journal with great interest. And more. You are a wonderful writer, and I ascribe that, in part, to the Australian environment. What is it about Australia that produces great actors and directors and writers? The Asia Pacific issue of JRLJ is a case in point.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you and to ask you if you have read Sana Aiyar's Indians in Kenya. It solved a lot of my Kenya identity issues and made me realise what a different sense of belonging to Kenya I have as compared with, for example, my father.
Best wishes
Jeanne
PS. I hope I've got the right Steve Pereira :-)

Jeanne, Steve RE Pereira is a Canadian and now settled in Australia. He was very much involved in the producing and holding of Desh Pradesh (Home and Abroad) show of South Asians in the 90s, if I remember the period correctly. As one who was in the field of theatre arts, I remember Stev, perhaps with another Goan, a play. The Desh Pradesh was largely the effort of the queer community of South Asians. If's unfortunate that the annual festival had to be shut down. Nice to know that. moving to Australia, Steve is doing his theatrical stuff.

Hi  Eugene,

Yes, I am the Steve Pereira of Desh Pardesh and I also produced and directed the play It’s A Goan Thing which we did to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the GOA in Toronto. I think we met a couple of times, if my memory is correct. I moved to Melbourne, Australia over 20 years ago now. Yes, its a pity the festival didn’t last but it was very much a product of the time and place.

Hope you and family are safe and well and well done on the Book club. I really enjoy the exchange of information.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

We did meet a couple of times, and I did watch It’s a Goan Thing, and I remember having is flyer. I knew about you going to Melbourne. As you rightly said, Desh Pradesh was right for the times. Another Goan who I met frequently was Nelson Carvalho, and haven’t seen him for years. Remember many of the key players of the festival, and one name that comes immediately to mind is of Rachel James, the artist.

I also remember another Goan, though forgets her name, but she was daughter of the famous artist Alex Tavares, if I got his name right.

Seeing your name on this forum, it just struck that you are the Steve of Desh Pradesh fame. Yes, the forum does provide lot of information, besides critical appreciation, and, at times, interesting debate.

Were you not writing short stories?

Hope you are safe, and nice exchanging notes.

Eugene

SAVAC created a mini site for Desh Pardesh...

There were quite a few people with Goan backgrounds involved, scroll down for the list. The original concept expanded to become more of a contemporary South Asian arts umbrella...the visual artists and curators started an active sister org South Asian Visual Arts Collective (SAVAC) ..it's still around today...

https://savac.net/collection/desh-pardesh/

Rachel Kalpana James is not Goan if I recall....maybe I'm mistaken

HI Eugene,

Nelson is still around, I am in touch with him and we catch up when I visit Canada.

Rachel James and Sheila James (her sister) were both involved in Desh but they are not Goans – they originate from South India –

Alex Tavares, daughter is Natasha, and I’m in touch with her as well. She is a teacher in Northern Ontario (somewhere remote) and is doing well.

I am writing short stories and plays here, working in community arts. – my website is linked to the logo below for your reference.

It’s good to be connected to the Global Goan network. Australia can be a bit isolating.

All the best

Albert, yes Rachael is not Goan. I knew her well and met her quiet often during the Desh-Pardesh time and after. I forget her sister's name. She was very much involved with SAVAC. Don't know if the body still exists. It used to hold visual arts shows. If I remember correctly, SAVAC came into a full-fledged group after Desh-Pardesh closed down.

Rachel's sister is Sheila James, and, I think, she's into theatre arts. Some of the names under the Desh Pardesh menu are of those writers, such as Vassanji, Shani Moottoo, Ondantje, are those who read from their works. The South Asian community is Toronto haven't seen anything like Desh Pradesh.

Steve, thanks for the info. I will try and get in touch with Rachael. I used to visit SAVAC at Richmond Street, and don't know if it still exists there. The sisters were probably from Kerela or Hyderabad. Good that you are still in touch with your Toronto friends. There's not much social activity in the South Asia community now. Perhaps, the new adults are too busy in their personal lives. The old guards of keeping South Asian activities alive are now old and tired. Unfortunately, the new generations hasn't the will nor the inclination to take over or venture into new social activities.

This conversation could be carried on at the personal level, as the issue seems to be getting too niche and hard to follow for many of us. If others have a different suggestion, it's welcome. FN
