New Age PrintersA new edition of the Konkani novel Foler Rakhnno, written by the late Reginald Fernandes, was released on March 16 in Siolim. The book was published by New Age Printers, the printing press of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.
The reprint was launched by writer and former Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Tomazinho Cardozo. Rev. Dr. Fr. Socorro Mendes, Parish Priest of St. Anthony Church, Siolim, attended as Guest of Honour. Also present were Fr. Originally published in 1970, Foler Rakhnno—translated as The Guardian of the Lighthouse—is a romantic novel set around the Sinquerim lighthouse and a hidden cache of jewellery. The book had been out of print for several years.
Speaking at the event, Tomazinho Cardozo highlighted the literary contribution of Reginald Fernandes and called for greater efforts to preserve and republish his works. He noted that while some recognition has been extended, more needs to be done to honour the writer’s legacy.
Fr. Socorro Mendes described Fernandes’ writing as engaging and accessible, noting that readers are often drawn to complete his novels in a single sitting. He also recalled a time when communities would gather to listen to such stories being read aloud.
Fausto V. D’Costa spoke on the distinctive style of Fernandes’ writing, pointing to its vivid imagery and conversational tone. He said the author’s use of concise dialogue made his storytelling widely relatable.
Fr. Myron Jeson Barreto welcomed the gathering, while Dr. Glenis Mendonca delivered the vote of thanks. The event was attended by literary enthusiasts, parishioners, and admirers of the late author.
