Dear Frederick,

Instead of baiting me by saying that Valmiki's 'Soaring Spirit' is the 'Mother of all Wedding Albums', had you just sent me the first chapter of Soaring Spirit viz. 'Margao a thumbnail sketch', I would have wholeheartedly endorsed your book. And allowed all the rest of Valmiki's Wedding Album to go unchallenged.

But given that you want to market Soaring Spirit as a Wedding Album when it is released on April 20 by some eminent Bamon or the other, who am I to stop you?

Bamons are Goa's 'best' friends. Bah!

Hi Gusto, I think you misunderstand me.

In my view, there's nothing wrong with what sociologists and some proff'sors of English disparagingly call "wedding videos". Photos or videos of ones weddings become boring when we inflict them on a reluctant, not-interested audience.

Not otherwise.

In a word, it's a question of whom the book is marketed to. If you are not interested in anything Margao, then don't go near Soaring Spirit. If you are a collector of Goa books, parts of it might interest you. What you call wedding videos, maybe someone in publishing might call a "micro-focussed" book.

We've been having a very interesting experience in marketing our local and village histories. In one case, a book sold 800 copies in three months. Agreed sales is not any indicator of quality, but it could reflect popularity. When I describe a book as the "mother of all wedding videos" (and I'm not being sarcastic or cheeky here), I mean it's extremely focussed... and we expected to draw some interest.

I fail to understand what objection anyone can have to a book which meets its market.

Of course, you're likely to come up with some other fault-finding argument.

I'm half way through reading this book and I love, love it. valmiki has done a superb job. I have no idea how he has collected the information that he narrates. Full review to follow in one of the weeklies I write for.

Don't listen to anything Augusto has to say on this subject matter. His Bamon bashing is boring and can hardly be the criteria for assessing every book.

Augusto has already accused me of being an agent of the church, now I'll probably be a handmaiden for the bamons of Goa and don't forget Basil the other Pinto thinks I'm some sort of informer as well. Hmm.

Best,
Selma

I am lucky to already have a copy of Valmiki Faleiro's new book on
Margao (only centered on the Holy Spirit church) and after a long
once-over find it fascinating, highly detailed and informative about
the many forces and threads that come/came together in the creation of
the city, its different communites, and the church itself.

It is actually one of the best, most measured cultural histories of
Goan identity out there - perhaps even the single best. I can
elaborate on these points when I finish the book (which will be after
a couple of weeks, unfortunately)

Also nicely designed and pretty meticulously edited, so Frederick +
Goa 1556 deserve credit too. I have no idea why this fine achievement
is being equated to "a wedding video." That makes no sense at all. If
you are interested in the making of Goa and the Goans, the book is a
must-read.

COMMENT:

While I personally do not understand either the basis or need for our dear Augusto to be needlessly contrary to the point of being repeatedly offensive to authors, I have come to believe and accept that that not only is his self given right, it also is how he wishes to be - with or without any proverbial or other reference to the world-famous (not only in Goa) village of Moira.

What I do NOT know is the advantage of this repetitious Augusto-Zaza about 'Bamons'.

I'd add here that an author with lesser steel (than Valmiki and Selma) would have been discouraged by Augusto's recurrent piadas.

While I have (obviously) have NOT YET read the index-book, I expect it to have been well researched and produced. I can see it being of significant interest (at the very least) to Modgomcars/cans.

If nothing else, I am certain, it will bring immense pleasure to all who were involved in its writing and production. May other similar works follow from many among this group.

Augusto, I suggest that you too take on a similar project on a topic of your choice. I offer to purchase and donate the first 50 printed copies to Goa libraries of your choice. I will merely PayPal the designated amount (no bulk discount) to FN's publishing company.

IF only I had your talent, knowledge and command over the English language, I would have churned out a book a year.

My parents were married at Margao's Espirito Santo Church in 1935. Based on VM's quick review which I respect, I would be grateful FN if you will mail me two (2) copies to my address in Toronto and bill me on PayPal as before.
BTW there must be enough 'Augusto sayings' now to put out a little wedding album on 'Augusto and the Bamons -the inside story'?

Dear JC, Sorry, but I think you're going to lose this money!

Despite our constant bickering and love-hate-hate relationship, Augusto is actually working on two interesting projects. One a major translation, and the other an afterword for a book.

Would either qualify?  Of course, it's another question as to whether Goa has 50 decent and well-utilised libraries at this point of time! It's a fact that the good ones have too few readers; the crowded ones (specially municipal libraries and school/college ones) lack infrastructure!

In any case, we will all pay back Augusto with our overdose of criticism when his work shows up. Karma works! He has now already commenced laughing away my if-you-think-you're-smarter-write-a-better-book logic :-)
