Kenneth David Jackson focuses on the novel written by VRR (Victor Rangel-Ribeiro), Tivolem. The novel, the first written by Rangel-Ribeiro (who completes 100 years young in 2025!) was written when the author was 70+. This discussion was at the Goa University in January 2025. Jackson is Professor of Luso-Brazilian literature at Yale University, with a special research interest in Portuguese literature and culture in Asia. His research in Goa, supported by the American Institute of Indian Studies, was conducted (since the 1970s) at the Xavier Centre for Historical Research. Prof Jackson is currently also an academic member of the Academia de Marinha (Lisbon) and the Academia Portuguesa de História (Lisbon) and a recipient of the Vasco da Gama Medal (Portugal) and the Ordem de Rio Branco (Brazil). Topic: Goan Culture and the Contemporary Novel

Thank you do much Frederick -- and Victor, of course!. I really enjoyed listening to this. What an interesting angle from which to analyse the novel.
I think of my own disastrous encounter with Porvorim where villagers came out to attack my agent who was fencing off (prior to sale) a plot of land my father had bought in the 60s or 70s. Another type of encounter between village and the outside world in the fraught conditions of the present!
