I look forward to seeing you all on Friday, where Dr Benedito Ferrao, author of Across Continents: Writing Goans, Making Worlds (African Perspectives) by University of Michigan Press and I author of Guts, Glory and Empire: The Epic Story of Goans in Zanzibar by Speaking Tiger, will be in conversation.
Among the topics discussed will be:
1. The unusual role played by the Portuguese Consulate in Zanzibar established in 1885, which was always under the influence of Goans. It played a pivotal role in creating a quasi-ruling class amongst Goans, which asserted judicial authority and enjoyed an early sense of autonomy.
2. The racism inflicted and endured by Goans in Zanzibar, and the mild complicity of Goans in the slave trade.
3. The drawing of intricate family trees which appear in the book, all of which have been created from scratch by using various archival sources.
The link below to join us from anywhere in the world. See you then.
Warmly,
Selma Carvalho
