 PRESS NOTE

‘Talk of the Month’ programme started with flying colours

We must speak in our mother tongue with our children : Tomazinho Cardozo

“Most of the Goans do not like to speak in Konkani in their day to day life. They don’t like to read Konkani dailies or magazines.  They don’t want to watch tiatr, mando or any other Goan folk art and dances. Even most prefer to attend Sunday  mass in English.” said Tomazinho Cardozo. He was speaking at the ‘ Talk of the Month’  programme organized by Dalgado Konknni Akademi at Reginaldo Fernandes Conference Hall, Panaji on 23rd August, 2021. ‘How can we preserve our mother tongue in the current scenario’ was the interesting topic on which Ex-Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Tomazinho spoke at length emphasizing that we must speak in our mother tongue with our children at home.

Quoting a famous linguist without naming he told “Grandfather and grandmother, the son and the daughter-in-law should speak in their ‘maim bhas’ with their children, then only the next generation will follow and the language will live forever.”

Speaking further he said that Konkani in Roman Script did not find a place in the Official Language Act and the political scenario at present is such that even MLA’s who get elected from Romi Konkani speaking area are shying away to have a change in the act. He emphasized that Romi Konknni should be taught to students after class hours or at the time of catechism.

While concluding, he asked the Goan community to save Gõy, Gõykar ani Gõykarponn. For that he said that we must speak in Konkani with our children, read Romi Konkani books, ask them to listen to Konkani songs on radio, read and tell children stories. Also bringing  back the good old days when the children used to play mittamni, tablam, gonje-bar. Promote  our Goan delicacies to our children.

The President of the DKA Vincy Quadros chaired the programme and promising to start get-together for Konkani speaking families and promotion of Romi Konkani at grass root level, thanked Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo for delivering a beautiful and powerful speech. Many writers and dignitaries were present for the programme.
