Hello All,

Sharing Benedito Ferra's essay in the MLA Book Tsaadi, titled "Goa on the Literary Atlas Questioning Belonging" since he is not currently subscribed to these fora.

Although I put off reading this scholarly article until later, I skimmed it to see what 'Goan fiction' in this Literary Atlas Bene has cited. More to the point, which of these books I've read.
These are the works of fiction cited in the article. I might have missed some ...

Savia Viegas, Let me tell you about Quinta
MG Vassanji, The Book of Secrets
Sunceta Peres da Costa, Homework
Peter Nazareth, The General is Up; In a Brown Mantle (memoir)
Johny Miranda, JVO: Requiem for the Living
Paul Melo e Castro (ed), Lengthening Shadows
Margaret Mascarenhas, Skin
Violet Dias Lannoy, Pears from the Willow Tree
Roanna Gonsalves, The Permanent Resident
Jessica Faleiro, The Beginning (in Afterlife: Ghost stories from Goa)

A fascinating selection, geared, no doubt to 'questioning belonging'.

Jeanne, one of the books missing from that list is the novel "Tivolem", which Milkweed published as  a hardback in 1998; it deals with life in a small fictitious village in Goa. Booklist said it was one of the twenty best first novels of the several hundred that were published in the United States that year. A headline in the Library Journal proclaimed, "Tivolem rises to the top." If Benedetto somehow missed it, copies are still available.

Regards to all,
Victor

Victor, Bene's selection was determined by 'questioning belonging'.
Now that I think of it, I didn't mention Os Brahmanes, in English translation, one of the novels he includes.
Good wishes
Jeanne

Jeanne, to second Victor’s response, one of the books missing from your list is “The Sting of Peppercorns,” which was initially published by Goa 1556, a send version was subsequently published in N. Delhi by Amaryllis and a translated version: "Nas Garras do Destino,: was published simultaneously in Portugal and Brazil by Chiado Editors and Brake Media. Very best, Antonio (Tony) Gomes.

Just to bring perspective to this discussion, it is not "Jeanne's List". This is a list of book professor Bene Ferrao teaches at an American university. Bene cannot possible include the full spectrum of Goan books published through the centuries, just those he finds most relevant to his course material.

This does not take away from the fact that Victor's book is one of the singularly influential books in Goan and world literature.

All best,
Selma

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I and I guess Victor did not know that you were mentioning the books from an article. Tony.

It's ok, Tony. Sorry I got cross.
I should have made a well tempered reply like Selma's. Meanwhile, the question remains: why these novels and how do they relate to questioning belonging. I guess the answer is in the article. Good idea to read it with a glass of feni. These scholars can be hard work.
All the best
Jeanne
