Sankoll bags DKA's 'Book of the Year' Award screams the headline.

I bought Sankoll at the release where a powerful priest was doing the honors.

But before I talk about Sankoll, I must talk about the Dalgado Konkani Akademi.

I have gathered that a priest whose name is Fr Conceisao D'Silva, currently statiioned in Taleigao which is Babush Monserrate's fiefdom, has become the Controller of the DKA.

He pays for the production of books that meets his approval.

I'll talk more about this nexus after any among you have the balls to contradict me about what I've said so far.

Augusto

Manest Augusto-bab,

There is no question of contradicting you by anybody. Since you have written "I have gathered that a priest whose name is Fr Conceisao D'Silva, currently statiioned in Taleigao which is Babush Monserrate's fiefdom, has become the Controller of the DKA.....," " He pays for the production of books that meets his approval..." you have to substantiate your statements with true facts. Mollob mekllem asa mhonn varear far soddche nhoy.

Hi Augusto,

Such vague and machine-gun bullet-spraying allegations would always be hard to substantiate and easy to prove wrong. While I do not claim to be an expert in the DKA financing, a modest effort at googling tells me what I knew. The institution was, and is, getting grants from the Government of Goa to run its activities (see below, which refers to an earlier year... but to my knowledge the situation continues more or less the same).

A short while ago, we translated one of our children's books into Romi Konkani. Espi Mai is Stuck Again and other Goan stories became Espi May Porot Xirkoli ani Goenchi her kotha. The money came from the above grant, and was all billed for.

While on this point, the DKA offers support for converting books into Romi Konkani, once they buy into the idea. Obviously, they have their own preferences, but are pretty easy to work with once they are convinced by a good idea.

Having said that, I do know that Fr Conceissao (as are some others) is supportive of the Romi Konkani cause. But criticism and comment need to be fact-based. FN

OK I presume that the preliminary statements against my statement have been exhausted.

Now I would like to discuss Sankoll by Bonaventure D'Pietro (peculiar name isn't it?)

The first statement that I shall make is that Sankoll is a novel (Kadom 'bori it says on the spine of the book) - not a 'Lollit' not a 'Kovita' not an ethnography but a 'Kadom 'bori' which as far as I know means a novel.

Manest Salu and non-manest FN - if you have any objections spill them out right now or else tond bond kor ani og'gi rav!!

For I shall be giving my considered opinion of DKA's Book of the Year - Sankoll by Bonaventure D'Pietro soon, unless of course you have any objections.

If you have any, please spell them out, or forever hold your peace.

Augusto

This book is available on dogearsetc.com for sale:
Here's a small blurb, excerpted from a review of the book by Dale Luis Menezes titled Matrimonial Traditions in Snapshots which appeared in the Gomantak Times, dt: July 6, 2013

Sankoll, a novel by Bonaventure D'Pietro, one of Konkani's great novelists, dwells on the theme of Goa's bygone traditions in Christian marriages. This novel is a departure from the signature style of the writer who is well-known for writing thriller novels in Konkani. Often referred to as the James Hadley Chase of Konkani literature, D'Pietro has a unique novel to offer to his fans and lovers of Konkani in the form of Sankoll.

The story of the novel, which tries to give its readers a glimpse of traditional Christian practices across Goa, unfolds through weddings in different regions of Goa: Bardez, Saxtti, Quepem, etc. The aim of the author is also to document the various practices, and hence a CD too of some traditional songs such as zoti, vers and saud is appended to the book.

The author has taken immense pains to research (with the help of many others acknowledged in the book) minute details about his subject in the writing of the book. Indeed, the reader would be immediately transported to a time when weddings were celebrated by erecting a mattov (pandal) and everybody danced through the night with the aid of petromax lamps and the ever-obliging muzg (musicians or band). D'Pietro's concern here is to narrate the step-by-step events leading to the marriage. This includes the seeking of life-partners through a raibari (match-maker) to the planning and preparation of food such as voddes and the end of the celebrations.
