Most interesting aspect of the article: reading books is much more prevalent in 'regional/ vernacular' languages, but far less highlighted - apparently only English is taken seriously as far as literary fame - in India as a whole - is concerned. While English in India is taken by most people for a 'working' language, not a liteerary one.

I read it with the South African literary scene in mind -- a desert in comparison. But, thinking of both fiction and non-fiction writing at the local level, I think South Africa holds its own. Sadly, in English and, book prices being what they are, for a limited readership.
But there are libraries -- and second hand bookstores and ...
In any case, it's the electronic product on which attention must, increasingly, be focused.
In any case, thanks for circulating this thought provoking piece.
