If FM N refers to Antonio Mascarenhas who worked at the Lisbon National Radio in the late 50s, and later returned to Goa (Dabolim), he published a couple of booklets in English, such as Essays for Diplomats on the Case of Goa, and A Critique of Sir S. Radhakrishnan's Basis for Human Fellowship. None of the publications show the date, but indicate that they were Edições Paulistas (Lumiar, Lisboa). He edited with his introduction Poesias do Povo Goês (Portuguese translations in verse of Goan folk songs) by Dra Maria da Paz Cabrita de Barros Santos and Jesuíno de Noronha. These were recited at the Emissora Nacional (last Tuesdays of every month) and Radio Universidade, in Lisbon ( on alternate Fridays). Please find attached images of the book title and the translation of the folk song Ami Bicari.
AM's wife, Mira, had registered for Ph.D. in History under my guidance in 1987, but she died a year later of a galloping cancer. She left some excellent contribution to the Church History series of CHAI.

Dear FN,
At the start of this thread it was not clear if buried poets were
included. Antonio Mascarenhas (1916-1993) could be added. He did write
poetry (Gerard Manley Hopkins was a great influence) but often on
little slips of paper which were never collated. Before his centenary,
I am trying to extract a few bits and pieces from the clutches of
untidy descendants.

Dear Dr Teotonio,

Thank you for this note on my parents and their writing.

My mother's MA thesis, "The Pombaline Era in Goa" is currently with
the publisher.

I do have a few of my father's books, but am looking for the English
original of his collection on Goan folk song -- I have the Portuguese
translation.

Boletim do Instituto Menezes Bragança published some of his poems and
his history of Goa.

Dear FN

I received a mail from Luis de Assis Correia which I quote below:

"Raul Loyola Furtado is a scion of the elite de Loyola Furtado family from Chinchinnim and is the third son of Dr Miguel de Loyola Furtado. On the maternal side he originates from Orlim. You may remember Advogado Jose Inacio de Loyola and Fanchu de Loyola from Orlim.

Dr Miguel de Loyola Furtado had three sons:
1) Advogado Mario de Loyola Furtado
2) Dr Alvaro de Loyola Furtado (You will certainly remember him for his Post-Liberation active politics)
3) Journalist Raul de Loyola Furtado who lived in Canada.

One daughter Leonora (Lolita) married Martinho Fernandes, Administrador das Communidades de Salcete, was a journalist-writer of "A India Portuguesa"

Dr Alvaro did his medical studies in French Pondicherry and was a family friend. I have fond memories of my visits to Dr Alvaro in Chinchinnim when I was in Loyola School, Margao.
Hope the above will interest you.
Kind regards
Luis de Assis Correia"

You make me wonder.

From the Wikipedia article the source of the snippet you "accidentally came across" is interesting. I think I independently came across a Raul de Loyola Furtado and never connected him to Joseph Furtado. The ...de Loyola Furtado name connects with the Chardos of the village of Orlim as I off-hand recall.

But Joseph Furtado was a resident of Pilerne and this is a fact - I could even I feel, identify the place where he lived which is now in ruins.

I'm sure that for many this discovery (if it indeed is true in the first place) is boring, but I find it quite fascinating.

Why would the son of a Chardo landlord of Orlim want to migrate to Pilerne a village which was I think dominated by Mitt Gauddas (intermediate/maybe upper caste salt-pan owners)

One thing I know is that JF had a tremendous fight with the ganvkars of the village and, after getting a very bad beating from the ganvkars, was forced to flee from the place.

(Such information can be culled out from his Introductions and there are references in  his poems too).

My quick rundown of the list of English poets didn't  see the name of Santan Rodrigues, who along with Melanie, formed the Bombay Poetry Club (if I am correct on the name). He also wrote for Goa Today. I think Santan died young but I don't know of what.

Teotonio has mentioned Antonio Mascarenhas and Mira. Fatima Noronha is their daughter and should throw more light on it. I remember reading Antonio's book on Goa's history.

Dear Fatima
I am very happy to have discovered you here.
I remember fondly my visit and a lunch with your parents on my way to the airport. Probably you too were there too or your sisters.
I am glad to know your mum's MA thesis is under publication. I remember that the substance of it was included in the CHAI volume edited by Fr. Hambye.
If I do come across any other book of your father in my collection I shall let you know.
Love and regards

Dear Dr Teotonio,
Thank you very much for your affectionate message. I did not have the
pleasure of meeting you at Miraton Gardens, as my two decades of
peregrination began in the early eighties. You probably met my sisters
Noemia and Layla. None of us became historians like our parents.
People still ask me for copies of my father’s Goa from Prehistoric
Times and Father Joseph Vaz of Sancoale, both out-of-print. I hope to
complete an e-version of the latter. I tried to tackle the history
book but found myself tearing my hair out because the author
cheerfully alludes to persons and events without providing exact
references.
Warm regards,
Fatima

Dear Fatima
Yes, it was your sisters Noemia and Layla. Where are they now?
I was not aware of the books you mentioned. I am not surprised if he does not provide many references. Probably he had access to very few Indian publications in Lisbon.
About José Vaz there are at least 3 editions of Sebastião do Rego, and more recently many fresh studies, including the Chronologia da Congregação do Oratoriio de Goa, ed. by M.de Jesus Martires Lopes. It would be essential to read it if you are preparing to re-edit your dad's book. It is an opportunity to update it with recent studies.
Warmest regards

Fatima is absolutely on the dot regarding her father not providing the list of references. The Prehistory of Goa sort of remind of the book, a MA or Ph.D thesis. I think the author is George Vaz (I can stand corrected).
It would be nice of Fatima to publish the Goan folk song book when she finds it. It could add to the collection of books on Goa's folklore.
Is there anyone doing research on folk songs at the Goa University?

Dear Dr Teotonio,

Thank you for indicating the direction a new edition of my dad's
biography of José Vaz could take. He wrote that book quickly at
Filomena Giese's suggestion, since at that time (1980?) she wanted a
biography to hand out to the various clergymen she lobbied for the
beatification (then) of José Vaz. There has recently been renewed
interest in the saint's life. GBC member Oscar de Noronha published
"Of Divine Bondage" in the run-up to the canonisation.

To answer your question: my sister Noemia lives in Miraton Gardens,
across from where my parents home once was. Layla lives in Raia and
lectures at the BITS Pilani Goa Campus.

Warm regards,
Fatima
